            Nice info, Ombugge. Are your calcs based on Great Circles or actual routes from a lookup table?

                I'm missing something here.

                Surely, anywhere on the surface of the world to anywhere else has a Great Circle solution regardless of direction. Even if a route was wholly North up a line of longitude, that would still be a still Great Circle. OK, longitudinal Great Circles are slightly shorter than the equatorial Great Circle but they are still Great Circles.

                For a ship, the only thing that would invalidate a Great Circle would be a land or ice mass en route (ships don't sail too well over land/ice) but for an approximation of route length a Great Circle calculation or a series thereof via intermediate way points (such as Las Palmas) would be valid.

                As far as I know, the only alternatives to Great Circle calculation(s) are:
                • by look-up from an almanac of routes.
                • by measuring off route segment(s) on an equidistant map projection or a series of minor distortion projections such as Lamberts. I didn't mention this before.

                I was just wondering which method you used to calculate your estimate of Finnmark's sailing time.

                By the way, I have a great implementation of the Vincenty Great Circle algorithm in javascript if anyone is interested. Form an orderly queue please.

                    Between any two different points on a sphere which are not directly opposite each other, there is a unique great circle.
                    If you are moving North/South along a meridian this is the Great Circle. Likewise if you are moving East/West along Equator.

                    If your starting and end points are far apart and at high latitudes the Great Circle may take you over the poles, which is utilized in aviation.
                    (FYI the first commercial transpolar flights was by SAS)

                    For shipping operating on high Latitudes the Great Circle route may be adventagiouse, unless you end up into ice, adverse weather or currents, in which case you may choose to "break" the Great Circle for part of the route.

                    Navigation is more than mathematics. It also involves knowledge of weather and current etc. Unless there is a lot to save most navigators will use the rhumb line course to navigate between two points.

                    I used this program to do the calculations: http://sea-distances.com/
                    They use the most adventagious route for their calculations, whether rhumb line or great circle.

                            Finnmarken is the only Hurtigrutens ship with a swimming pool. I guess it's the only Hurtigruten ship with a hairdresser as well?:
