The reason she will be manned by Australian Unionized Seamen is Australian rules for vessels working in their EEZ. They will be hired by Hurtigruten however, most like through an Australian Crewing Agent. At least that is how it is normally done.

As for delivery/re-delivery port, it could be Bergen/Olen, with the transit being on dayrate at normal T/C terms (Fuel etc. paid by Charterer).
But more likely it would be an agreed lump sum for mob/de-mob. In that case delivery port will likely be Dampier or Fremantle to prepare for deployment at Barrow Island.

The Aussi crew may sail her down to Oz, or come on board some place under way. Many Owners prefer to keep some of their own crew on board, even if they have an Aussi "double". The reason is the temporary nature of employment for the Aussies, which doesn't give them any incentive to worry too much about maintenance etc.

I'm presently involved in checking on the condition of vessels returning from Montara Field after some months in Australia. The cabins and mess room etc. are adorned with stickers from the Seaman's Union and various other "decorations" + some grafiti in the "Kilroy was here" style. Maintenance routines has also suffered neglect.
Thank your Ombrugge, it's good to read some expert speculation.

I had wondered about transit issues (such as dayrate basis versus agreed lump sum and crew) but hadn't got as far as considering long term crewing during the 18/36 month duration. I also hadn't considered the possibility of a mid-transit handover.

I guess this would have been a nice one for you to broker. Next time maybe.

What you say about your "Montara" checks doesn't bode well for poor Finnmarken. Maybe we should all pray for a miracle - no stickers, no grafiti, no damage, and high levels of maintenance. As others have already said, let's hope the works of art are being removed (possibly right now as I type).

By the way, I emailed Boskalis and asked if they are able to release more information about the contract. Their press officer replied very quickly, politely explaining that he is limited in the information he can release. It is understandable that he cannot commit (Boskalis is a listed company and must not upset their share holders or the main contractor) but at least he has my short wish-list for consideration in future press releases :-
    • Progress/photos during Finnmarken's Transit from Norway to Australia
    • Photo(s) of Finnmarken on station at Barrow Island after she has arrived.
    • The composition of the peronnel to be accommodated on Finnmarken.

After looking through all of these fantastic photos of her (Thank You everyone!), I have developed some feelings for her, I hope she does not suffer too much on her voyage down under. She's a beautiful ship and deserves to be well cared for.

If not anything else, at least (like Lady C suggested) remove all the Dag Bakka artwork and transfer them to other ships during the charter.

It would be tragic if they are sent 'down under'.

The keyword in my scramble is 'shipspotting'. That usually involves a camera

Hopefully, they spot the right ship...

Came to think of it today: when Finnmarken sails out from the shipyard in all white costume, it won't be the first time in the history a coastal steamer by the name Finnmarken sails all white! White is eventually back!

Nope, that's right. The first "Finmarken" (with one letter 'n' that is), was delivered from Trondheims Mek. in 1912.
By the way, as the ship was broken up in the Netherlands, or rather Holland, in 1960, the 1. Class smokesaloon was taken care of and can be seen at Bergen Sjøfartsmuseum...., correct me if I'm wrong

I've heard rumors that Finnmarken has already received her white coat?

Anyone in that area which can give us an update?

I wonder how that'll look like.... I think it might be quite cool seeing her in bridal-innocent-white.

Well, we are quite used to see cruise ships in an all-white "dress"..., so this should not be different.
Hope they paint some sort of a logo/name on her to promote Hurtigruten on her way south.
