  • Sjøkurs ex. Ragnvald Jarl

M/S GANN ex. Ragnvald Jarl now M/S SJØKURS got a new colour of her hull last year, and what a colour...., just take a look:

(Belive the photographer is someone calling himself 'Glenn91' )

Isn't she a beauty..? Just wich she took her birthname back...

Wow..., that last picture is just like seeing yet another old hurtigrute!!!

EDIT: And by the way..., she's about to get a bow thruster installed in May of this year...., whatever she needs that for
after over 50 years of sailing.....

She looks a ton better with black, instead of white with a red belt. I don't think I have seen her in real since she left the coastal service: that is quite a while now.

A thruster? Does she need a thruster? After 50 years of service, she suddenly need a thruster... spring lines is also good thrusters.... But off course, it's a great way to teach students using a thruster. I just hope it is not done with exhaust from an own generator in the bow... that looks wired: I saw that on the old cruise ship Victoria I think. When she came up to the port in Civitavecchia, a black cloud came out from a small hole near the waterline in the bow: the thruster exhaust outlet.

With the installation of a thruster on this old ship: I guess they must power it with something from somewhere. Maybe a new generator?

I would guess a need for a bowthruster has arised due to the fact that she still is a school-ship..., a teaching institution for coming seamen and women.
The students would still learn to maneouver a ship with anchor and spring, but I guess they would also have to have the ability to teach new students how to operate with a thruster...., because like it or not; that's what they will meet in real life once graduated....

Every investment is O.K., because this prooves that the ship is well maintenanced and prepared for the future. I hope a lot of brave seamen are graduating on this ship and will well remember her for their life!

It is so good to see her in her old colours again.

I think installing a thruster has more to do with her home port which is quite narrow, and up to now she has very often been dependent on assistance from the pilot vessel or other small tugs when arriving. I believe that the cost of the thruster soon will beat the running costs of renting assistance.

As far as the learning value of having a thruster or not onboard I think the difference is marginal. The students of Sjøkurs has just graduated elementary school and the real valuable experience from a training ship lies in living and cooperating with other people more than the technical equipment onboard. During their years to come they will get plenty of time and experience in every aspect of the profession, including manouvering different types of ships.

Well, at least this is my own experience.

June 21. "Sjøkurs" (ex Ragnvald Jarl) will sail on a short one-day cruise from Kristiansand to Risør. A sort of a culture-cruise with chamber-music, and other cultur-stuff.

Risør host a music-festival with classical and chamber-music. And "Sjøkurs" will serve as a hotell-ship during the festival.

                    How wonderful, Hurtigrute Martin!
The Risør Chamber music festival is very famous and one of those things which I’ve often thought would be nice to go to, though would also require much advance planning to get tickets, and for accommodation in such a small place. Of course staying on such a ship would be the best of all possible arrangements!

I heard there was the theme of revolutionary composers this year – from Beethoven to Shostakovich. I actually met Shostakovich when he was a specially featured composer at the Edinburgh Festival in the 1960’s (long before I was living in Edinburgh!). His string quartets were being performed, one in each morning’s concert – there were only eight quartets at that point in time. It was a perfect example of the whole being more than the sum of the parts – by the time of the last quartet performed in the presence of the composer on the eighth day, the atmosphere in the hall as the last notes sounded was just incredible, almost unbearably emotional and moving. I have never experienced anything quite like it before or since.

I have a music score which Shostakovich autographed. Actually it looks as if someone was scribbling trying to make a biro type ball-point pen work.
I would never want to sell it. In any case I have no proof of provenance, like a concert programme or ticket from that time. This is due to one of my mothers all too frequent “tidying up” (= throwing out ) sessions of so much of my stuff which happened after I moved away into temporary accommodation. Fortunately I had that score with me . . .

Just as a result of pure luck combined with AIS, I managed to get "Sjøkurs" with my camera today.
Drove to the city, and discovered they were just about to undock. Well, the mentioned bow thruster was never to be seen, neither with a sign painted on the hull nor used when undocking.
Here she's seen in the harbour of Kristiansund (with the very old vessel "Enigheten" of Bergen on deck, without me knowing why....).

Here they sail out the Markussundet outlet

                      "Enigheten" of Bergen on deck

It was just like seeing "Ragnvald Jarl" again

I was just outside Tømmerstø, near Kristiansand looking for "Sjøkurs". But she wasn`t "at home".

I`m glad you found our dear old Ragnvald Jarl, Sterkoder.

What is the story and background of "Enigheten"??
She wouldn't stand out in an Indonesian port.

Since you read norwegian, here's a link:

                            http://www.skipsmodeller.com/Uploaded/ENIGHETEN.pdf

And interesting to notice, for detailfreaks like me, they have the streamer used on board "Enigheten" flying from the right side of the main mast...
(Maybe it's Bergen Kystlag of Forbundet Kysten chartering "Sjøkurs"...?).

EDIT: Well just found out about the streamer. They've been visiting Forbundet Kysten and the Landsstevnet 2009 at Vega outside Brønnøysund. The streamer has the logo of Forbundet Kysten, and this is an ordinary cruise "for everyone" at a price from NOK 9.000,- to 15.000,- pr. bunk all meals included.

By the way, here's the reason for you not finding the ship in Kristiansand and me finding her here in Kristiansund, sailing plan for the summer of 2009:
