ex MS Nordnorge - Island Explorer

This is a continuation of the old thread we had:

    http://captainsvoyage.7.forumer.com/...asc&highlight=

About three years ago ex-Nordnorge was scrapped very suddenly after serving for less years in the Maledives as cruise ship and floating resort Island Explorer.

Here some old pictures out of the brochures i found in the net:

    Lofoten '07 ...... Nordnorge '11

Interior pictures and the swimming pool at the position where the freight room door was...

What a pity she could not be rescued in this shape...

Anyone with more information about her life as Island Explorer? Or some pictures from Hurtigruten?

From some contacts, I heard the reason for her scrapping was a result of a leaking bottom plate at her keel... the cost of replacing it was scaring the owner to rather have her scrapped...

I haven't heard this confirmed in any way, it is just one of those words that went around, and could be just that: a rumor.

I was just reading some holiday reports of divers, which had the Island Explorer as accomodation, while they were diving there. Some of them wrote that at the same time the company was building up a lot of bungalows on a nearby island. So maybe the floating resort was planned as compromise for some years. But the ship's refurbishment was sigificant and for sure not cheap. Hard to believe that a leaking bottom plate was to reason to give up the ship.
Hope to find some diver pictures in some old blogs, if there is enough time some day...

I was thinking the same thing but I rather think it was a contributing cause maybe... one item on a list of other important and extensive maintenance issues. It could also be corrosion damages to fresh water holding tanks on board and such problems: they can be hard and quite expensive to fix within a tight budget and time frame.

Well.. maybe some day, we will be lucky and find that special blog with that special piece of information or confirmation....

Here is an image to remember this wonderful ship: a post card which was on sale on board:

I looked through the Gujarat website list of completed ships to see if I could find the Island Explorer, but naturally, she could have had another name when she sailed up to that dreadful beach.

Based on her known tonnage, could she be among these ships?

                Memories of NORDNORGE

I just want to share som memories of the previous NORDNORGE (1964) with all of you here.

                1. NORDNORGE for the very last time in Bodø april 1996 in Hurtigruten

                2. A retired NORDNORGE layed up in Narvik june 1996. Before she was taken over by her new owners.
                I felt very empty inside me when I saw her like this. She was so......so......... S I L E N T
And this was the very last time I saw her........

                3. And this is how I like to remember her. Full of LIFE. Filled with music and smiling passengers. Even my good-looking ex-girlfriend (in front), enjoyd this.

The girl slipped away from me, and the floating LADY are gone......... BUT the memories will live forever............

Great seeing new images of our almost forgotten lady: the ship that just vanished into history and which sadly was scrapped without anyone even noticing it.

Sad to see her gone, and sad that we have no official confirmation on what was the cause of her scrapping, and where it was executed.

As I may have mentioned before: To me she was the most beautiful ship of the 60's generation! I sailed with her two times: From Trondheim to Kirkenes in 1988 and from Kristiansund to Torvik in 1994 when I was on my way to join my first ship - a summer job onboard a small reefer ship

Do we know if Shreeji Shipping is located in Alang or another city?

That seems to be the confirmation we have so long been wanting. Sad, but already completed. Nothing but memories of her left.

but all you ever wanted to know about Alang is available there, in a glorified manner.
