Re: ex HARALD JARL ::: ANDREA :::

Although I may be unpopular for saying so, I think H-J's interior looked better than ever after her 2002 refit (and associated renaming). So, personally, I hope that the Gustavian decor, fixtures and fittings have survived the arrest/auction proccess and that the new owners will respect them.

I also hope that the wonderful open-topped B&W engine has survived. Eventually it deserves a prominent place in the Hurtigrute museum.

      Good news!
The Auction held February 21st was successful reports the German Website SeereisenPortal (here) According to their writing, the Andrea has been sold to a Russian Company who will sail her as soon as April under her new name of SERENISSIMA. The Compayn is presently looking to appoint a GSA in Germany, as they are planning to heavily market her there. Same owners operate a river vessel between Moscow and St.Petersburg, said to be the only 5° River Boat there - VOLGA DREAM. A Video and Website can be found also in the afore mentioned article.
lets hope this venture will be a success and ex Harald Jarl spend a few more years plying the oceans.

Thank you for watching this site, Locarno. Usually they are competent and good informed, however we can't find a second confirmation for this in the web. It will be good news if we see her more in the Nordic waters again. I am convonced if someone is rediscovering the flair of the old ships along the Norwegian coast, that can be a success. Having more time in the interesting ports to do more sightseeing could be an attractive alternative to a coastal tour on a new HRG ship. It is a niche market, but it is a market.

Here's my best attempt at a translation:

"As we reported several times (s.15.02), the second auction on Feb 21, 2012 was a success for the Hypo Alpe Adria bank. Classic ship fans can breathe again and rejoice that the lady will soon set sail again. In April, the new owner, the Russian 'Volga Dream' [company], plans to market the former Andrea under the name MS SERENISSIMA. The ship, which lay at anchor for several years in a Croatian shipyard, is being made shipshape once more, with particular regard to SOLAS 2010. The Russians have already proved an understanding of their business in the attention to detail and luxury demonstrated in the renovation of an old river boat - the very successful VOLGA DREAM - which runs between Moscow and St. Petersburg. As our man-on-the-ground reports, the Russians plan to bring MS SERENISSIMA to Hamburg, as the base for Nordland cruises."

I'm not sure what "Nordland" means in this context but I don't think it means the Norwegian county of Nordland. Could it be a non-specific reference to northern Germany and southern Scandinavia (ie the Baltic)?

When we say Nordland in Germany, that includes all areas North of us, so the Baltic, the complete Skandinavian Area, Greenland, Iceland, Spitzbergen and the Arctic.
A lot of possible destinations. And all near to her original home...

Thanks Ralf, I've not come across the German use of "Nordland" before.

I've tried finding any news online about our beloved Harald Jarl, but she doesn't appear on AIS or Google Earth anywhere...

Perhaps some port schedules of nearby ports... ?

Any idea where she might be right now?

If not then the two men bear a remarkable resemblance to each other.

Andrea has shifted from her lay-up berth to the Viktor Lenac shipyard in Split, where she will be upgraded to SOLAS 2010 and receive some major refurbishment, said the new russian owner. The Owner of VOLGA DREAM is said to aim the ship at the luxry 5* market. Maiden voyage scheduled for April 2013. Attached photo shows the Andrea at the yard. Perhaps some of her former Deck/Engine Cew may be rehired? Interesting to see who will do the Hotel and Catering services.

That's fantastic news Locarno. Only a few days ago we were all still wondering if she would go to the scrapyard.

Nice one H-M. There's some new information there, including news that Serenissima "is being fitted with new stabilisers".

                              Several questions spring to mind:
                              • Were the new owners inspired to fit stabilisers by the photo of Caroline H's split head?
                              • Will this be the first example of a Hurtigruten ship of that era to be fitted with stabilisers?
                              • How much internal space will be lost to the pumps/pipes/motors/wiring/control gear associated with the stabilisers?
                              • How effective will stabilisation be given the hull's natural tendency to roll?
                              • If stabilisation is effective, will rough-riders HurtigruteMartin and HaraldJarl ever want to sail in her?

Don't know. But from 16:13- I did spot Tormod Sandaker, the engineer on Midnatsol when they made "Hurtigruten 365"
