I apologize that I am very much into the new price-calculation running from 01.01.2011

Hurtigruten say it is cheaper, and much more easy to understand.

I have done some research. Tryied to book tickets from random port to ports.

The main thing is that cabins has become cheaper. Especially standard outside cabins, compare to last years price-calculator.

(But the old D-category-cabins without private facilities on Nordstjernen and Lofoten has been more expensive)

Hurtigruten ASA says the new system is very easy. But there are still some confution. If you book online, you will often find another price compare to the official distance price-calculator.

That is because they have put in some hidden discouts on several popular routes

Here are some random prices. All prices is in NOK, winterprices for ONE person (Sgl cabin)

Without = online tcket without cabin
Ins = online ticket incl inside cabin
Outs = online ticket incl standard outside cabin
Ticket = Official ticketprice due to the boklet pricetable
X = Impossible to buy online

    ----------------------------- ONLINE --------------- BOOKLET PRICES
--------------------- Without cab Ins Outs --------Ticket ins cab
    Bodø-Harstad-----------------541 791 853-------- 540 250 = 790
    Harstad-Bodø-----------------341 841 966-------- 540 500 = 1040

    Bodø-Tromsø-----------------441 815 909 --------- 710 250 = 960
    Tromsø-Bodø-----------------709 1210, 1337-------- 710 500 = 1210

    Bodø-Trondheim-------------- X 1210, 1337 --------710 500 = 1210
    Trondheim-Bodø-------------- 541 791 853--------- 710 250 = 960

    Stokmarknes-Bodø----------- 470--------------------- 470

As you can read out of this table, there are some hidden discounts in several routes.

It is cheaper to travel Bodø-Tromsø without cabin, than the shorter route Bodø-Stokmarknes.
It is 200 NOK cheaper to go Harstad-Bodø without cabin, than the oposite way Bodø-Harstad.

Bodø-Tromsø has also different online-prices without cabin northbound and soutbound.

As you also can read out of my price-calculator it can be very wise to order ticket without cabin ONLINE, and buy a cabin when you border the ship. In some routes.

An example to this is Bodø-Tromsø:
    Online ticket 441 + cabin onboard 250 = 691

The same ticket with online booked inside cabin is 815

Maybe Hurtigruten ASA think this is easy. But it so easy that you can be misguided to pay more than you need.

Oh Martin, please don’t apologise! You are our expert in the Hurtigruten distance travel!
I had only looked at the webpage about the new concept and attempted to read the Norwegian, so your more thorough research was welcome.
I’m pleased to see that it is still possible to book a ticket without cabin in most cases (even though I have always had a cabin I like the idea that it is not compulsory, especially thinking about students and young people travelling). And it is interesting to see that there are these discounts in the booking system.
Booking a complete trip through the London office is fine, as they are very much geared to that, but I much prefer to be able to book shorter port-to-port journeys myself on-line.

Don't know if someone in here have mentioned it before, but anyway:

Travel Weekly and Associated Newspapers arrangement Globe Travel Awards in London 17th January, gave a first prize third year in a row to Hurtigruten for being best in special cruises.

During the Grand Travel Awards in Oslo a few days earlier, Hurtigruten also got the first prize for being best in the field of arranging special cruises.

So, in that company, someone must have done the right thing. Congratulations!!

Hurtigruten discussed worldwide as an "anti-cruise"!

All the features mentioned in the "anti-cruise" article are exactly why we choose to cruise on Hurtigruten! Our cruise isn't until April and we're already anticipating all the fun we'll have..without bingo, art auctions, hairy-chest contests, newlywed games and all the other silliness of the big cruise lines!

From time to time I might get asked; do you ever work???
Of course I do, but right now I have my lunchbreak, and I spend a little time browsing through some of the worlds newspapers.

This is the reason for me finding this interesting article about a hurtigrute-cruise along the norwegian coast from Bergen to Narvik, by a journalist at the newspaper The Boston Globe.
