Well at least the company isn't afraid to spend money - or hopefully secure Norwegian jobs. Apologies for the Norwegian only versions of these.

So what do you all think about these new ships?

I think they look very nice: modern, and strong, just like new expedition ships should look like. Very different from the 1990-generation as well....

Like some of the features on them: the baclony cabins, the viewing deck in the bow and rumors of a pool with heated water on the after deck.

Yes, it is a nice look! (and hello everyone, sorry for being not very active here as of late, but all is well!) Of course the color scheme has a lot do with it. The black hull is important - imagine these in white or, well... say... with some AIDA-like nonsense painted on...

          Hi,
About the proposed new Hurtigruten ships ....

May I say that the stern views of the ships does not compare well with the backsides of old Hurtigrutes esp that of MS Finnmarken !!
Nevertheless, congrats to the Norwegians who have fought hard for those ships against the competing yards of Europe and dare I say, Asia.

I presume everybody has noticed that we have a Singaporean Hurtigruten enthusiast here on CVF??

Could there be enough other Singaporeans with an interest in Hurtigruten to start a Singapore chapter of the Hurtigruten fan club on here??
            What say you Mike??

              Harro ombugge,
Not really in position to comment about other fellow Singaporean enthusiasts in matters Hurtigruten, let alone starting any fan club.
As you well know that the cruise scene in SG is dominated by Star Cruises using their older ships to do short SE Asian jaunts.
I think that many Asian cruise passengers are interested in food and gambling on these short trips. You will also recall that Royal Carribean Int. has recently entered into the SG market with a local office. If I may be allowed to speculate a little - the cruise market in SG is confined to individuals getting trips via the big cruise companies marketed increasingly from the internet.
More about this Singaporean's impressions on Norway and things Norwegians in other posts to come, but no, not fan club.
              best wishes from SG.

Interesting, but I wonder what current ships are they planning to scrap or sell off once these new ones are built?

The new ships are not meant for the coastal service. They have neither car nor cargo facilities, as far as I can see from excisting information. They are meant for exploring and will not interfere with the ships in the excisting service.

Whew! Am glad to hear that. Looks like the seas will slowly become a little more crowded...

When this news broke a few months back, and the first renderings came out, I was extatic... and I'm still pretty extatic aout them.

There is just one image in that article I do not "like", and that is the sideview.... they look ...how to say thos the best.... "chubby"...(?)....

They look short, and tall.... not to the point of ugly, but more like a chubby .... piece of bread.... not the right words perhaps, but I guess we can wait and see till they are finished to make up our minds whether we like them or not.

I understand what you mean. Imagine the ship with a "normal" bow. That would look much more elegant and familiar, i guess,
Maybe it is the mixture of that vertical old-school steamer bow and the cruiser or yacht lines of the ship's side.
I think it is the mixture which is disturbing...they should decide.
Fram is also very unique, but out of "one moulding" (German saying, can we say that in English also?).

I love Rolls Royce's design but why break with tradition?

Best fjord in Norway?? Absolutely Hjorundfjorden - though I have only seen two others: Naeroyfjord and Geiranger.

The new Hurtigruten Polar Expedition vessels will have hybrid propulsion, with possibility to operate on pure battery power for some time: http://maritime.no/nyheter/hurtigrut...er-hybridskip/
