I remember a note from Fram's blog last year already mentioning a night ashore under a tent (but maybe it was only members of the expedition team?).
I'm sure it's an experience, but the price is terrible! (dunno)

For anyone who enjoys looking at Hurtigruten and what I think is motifs from the northern part of the country, you may wish to spend the next 4-5 minutes watching this video:

Re: Hurtigruten ASA - news and comments

There is a big discussion in Norway these days... a housewife in Molde and a couple of people in Harstad have been complaining wildly about the old tradition where the HRG ships blow their whistles at arrival (Molde and Harstad).

As a result, the ships stopped doing so in both places, and from what I understand, also in Stamsund and Svolvær too....

Many people got really upset about this, because it was a tradition with the ships to blow their whistles at arrival.

A facebook group was formed by a person who wanted Hurtigruten to start blowing like they have always done, and within a couple of days, more than 10.000 people joined in and wanted the return of the whistle.

The group is called "La Hurtigruta tute som før" (Let the Hurtigruten ships blow their whistles like before).

What do you think? To blow or not to blow?

I personally like it if they continue their "blowing".... it's a tradition and "koselig" (cozy).... I like hearing the ship (even though, I don't hear them here in Trondheim).

          Let them blow!

Re: Hurtigruten ASA - news and comments

Hurtigruten has an over 100 years tradition to blow the north- and southbound arrival signal, they blow when two hurtigrute ships meet in oipen waters (the northbound is to signal first) and they blow a single signal five minutes before leaving the quay.
Northbound signal is long-short-long, while the southbound is long-long-short-long.
The Hurtigruten respect rules of peace (quiet) as on shore, and will not blow their horns between 23:00 and 08:00.
Now, after that sensitive woman in Molde gave her protest, they stop blowing at 20:00. CRAZY!!!!
I know that there are many interesting people reading CVF, and I hope the right person in Hurtigruten ASA also does:
Why did you listen to a HANDFUL of people not being able to tolerate your over 100 years gtraditional signals????
Hurtigruten came long before that Molde-woman and her children, and if she can't tolerate the sounds of a city...., she'd better move some place into the wilderness. Finnskogen, perhaps.....

Keep on blowing the traditional signals!

I absolutely agree. Whether I am on board coming into a port, or on shore, the sound of an arriving hurtigrute thrills me every single time. It is exactly these kind of traditions that are at the root of my respect and love of Hurtigruten and that keeps me returning to travel the coast year after year.

Re: Hurtigruten ASA - news and comments

Yesterday I listened to radioprogram at NRK called "Norgesglasset". The whistle-blowing was a big issue in that radioprogram, A story was told......... A family had moved from the coast to the inland-area Hedmark. In their new home, the 2 small children in the family refused to go to bed, and was not able to sleep, because there were no hurtigrute-whistle-blowing. The whistle-sound had been their signal that it was bed-time. A safe and regular routine for the kids and the parents. At their new home far away from Hurtigruten, every evening became a nightmare because they missed the safe blowing-signal.

So................ Hurtigruten is a lot more than ships, passengers and buissiness............Hurtigruten is a PERSONAL thing. And every changes are serious interventions in a lot of peoples daily routines

So please, give us the whistle-blow back, so we can remain our safe family routines. We need to HEAR you

I so agree with all of you, without knowing the full story.

Let them blow - this is tradition!

Anyhow, how about a video from Hurtigruten on Cruise Today?

I confess the problems of this nice lady from Molde moved me.
So may I suggest her few solutions
                    1)ears ablation
2)a whole week of courses in a Black Metal school
                    3)suicide

We have also discussions here in our country about nightly noise caused by church bells, which is quite ridiculous. What about people living near an airport, a train station or a highway? Do they have the same rights? There is a line, what should be tolerable and what not. A ship horn blowing once a day for a few seconds is for me cleary before that line. Hurtigruten should be here not too flexible. Let a court decide before being anticipatorily obedient.

I just answered a Hurtigruten web-questionnaire that was sent to random customers.
Many questions was formulated "would it be interesting for you to...".

It seems that they are considering some new concepts that could be marketed during the coming years:
                          - possibility for hop on - hop off cruising
                          - try to attract cruisers by including flight tickets as a part of a complete package
                          - excursions (by land) from Kirkenes to Russia
                          - excursion packages; cultural, active vacation, etc.
                          - more off-the-ship activities; golf, horse riding, fishing, boating

We'll see if any of those will be introduced within a couple of years.

Apologies if I've just not spotted this one and someone else has already posted - but just in case - 12 ships, 12 horns in Honningsvåg!!

                            Cheers,

An excursion to the border was an option when I travelled on the K.O., time and sufficient number of passengers permitting. But it didn't take place because of lack of time. (I think weather had been delaying us somewhat in the later stages of the journey northwards.)
