Is it still a tradition to polish all the brass on board before departure from Bergen, or has that now been a forgotten tradition...?

Think it looks awesome with that shiny brass, and look at the shiny ships bell in part one 1 minute 53 seconds.... Crystal Clear!

Thanks a lot for this video! Especially interesting I found the footage of "Harald Jarl" as "Andrea". Also, I thought again that the old funnel colours are certainly nicer than the Hurtigruten logo funnel, although it's not bad - nothing against a black funnel. "Polarlys" has a special spot in my heart, although I otherwise prefer the old ships, because prior to my first "real", longer Hurtigruten trip (January/February 2006, with "Lofoten" Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen), "Polarlys" was, in 2004, the first Hurtigruten ship I travelled with, if only for a few hours - from Hammerfest to Honningsvåg.

Having seen this clip many times before, this question has struck me as well With up to two overnights in Bergen before the next round trip, i'm sure they had much more time (and people) in the old days to pay attention to details like this. And for sure captain Dahl-Stamnes had made sure that his ship was shining extra with a TV team onboard It's such ajoy to see this film from a spotless Håkon Jarl. The STYLE is imminent from top to bottom. Even the brass on the manouver handles are shining And from what I have heard of Captain Dahl - Stamnes he was not a man who would tolerate any lack of STYLE

yes - and the barge in Berlevåg loading people and a cow (!) with the crane. And of course the loading of post sacks from a horse carriage. Things were definitely more basic in those days.

Berlevåg got its pier in 1974, but Gamvik, when that place was a port of call, was operating that way all the way until 1990. As a young boy I was traveling with the old Nordnorge in 1988 and I still remember how I stayed up late that night to observe this

I see that both the new boats have got problems according to the website:

På grunn av en mere omfattende reparasjon av bb propellsystem må MS Trollfjord kansellere seiling Trondheim – Kirkenes – Bergen 27.01. – 05.02.2012.
Skipet vil gå i rute fra Bergen 08.02.2012 ihh til ruteplan.

Midnatsol not leaving BGO until 0100 tomorrow morning, due to repair of a generator, back on time by departure Ålesund.

                  MS Midnatsol – ruteendring 31.01.2012

Despite the success of the TV-show last year, the financial numbers are still very red.... 153 million NOK in deficit....

                            Need to know:

From the english speaking countries, are the foreign passengers on board hurtigruten mostly americans or english people...?
Does anybody know, or are there any of you who can lead me in direction of statistics..?

Happy to get an answer, hopefully soon

Sterkoder, there are unregularly (not neach year) numbers published in the annual report, the last information i found in 2010.

The UK people have the majority.

According to these numbers 20.000 UK people spent 95.000 cruise nights aboard a Hurtigruten ship in 2010.
In comparison there were 8.000 US people spending 48.000 cruise nights.
(48.000 Germans spent 345.000 nights, 270.000 Norwegians spent 380.000 nights)

The report for 2011 knows that UK bookings for 2012 increased by nearly 60%, while US bookings are about 10% lower.

Is that sufficient information or do you want to know more?
