I do agree with you Ralf. You do seem to have the very same opinion as me.

As you also mention, to build a new ship will take some years. First they have to design a general lay out, then design on which one to build, then make an MoU, and then do the actual building.

This is at least 3 years into the future in my opinion.

I do hope they will pick a Norwegian shipyard to build it.

But, those details, we can discuss in the "new ships thread".

A funny new look at the new deal with the Government:

CEO Hegnar and the Government hand in hand: 10 years ago, Hurtigruten was basically told to manage by themselves, now, the CEO has managed to double its subsidies from the Government.

www.seereisenportal.de is reporting about an interview with Olav Fjell. That was heard:

With the new contract the company gets the opportunity for planning and building a new ship for the coastal service. The "Finnmarken" will come back in coastal service after her 3-years-charter in Australia.

So it seems they drew their option down under, which is not surprising, because they recently enlarged their works there and they expect first gas delivery in 2014 or 2015. So there seems to be some time left for our old ships.

          Though winter for Hurtigruten.

The number of passengers on Hurtigruten Group's ships increased with 15% in first quarter of this year (2011), compared with last years numbers.

But, the company is struggling to increase profitability.

In first quarter, the operation-results landed on -89,6 million NOK, a weakening from the operational deficit of -72,4 million last year.

The income increased from 727,8 million NOK during last years first quarter, to 797,9 million NOK this year.

iTromsø and Hurtigruten is reporting good numbers right now... 62 million NOK on the plus-side, but warn that the whole-years numbers aren't that good yet.

...and I wonder how the Nordlys accident will affect the results for Q3? Insurance will cover much of the expenses, but still... Numbers are ready 10th of November.

There's going to be a lot of HRG ships in Trondheim this week. Both Trollfjord and Kong Harald have canceled Trondheim - Bergen due to the weather. Both ships will be laying at Ila, TF until 28, KH until 29 of december.

Richard With was north bound in Aalesund yesterday. She is still here, moored up on Stornespiren, which is not the normal place for Hurtigruten while in Aalesund:

Forecast for Aalesund tonight is W'ly 32 m/s with gusts to 40-45 m/s from 2100 to 0100 hrs.

"Tirsdag kveld var det særdeles høy tetthet av hurtigruteskip i Trondheim Havn. Hele fire skip lå da til kai. "

"Tuesday night of there was a particularly high density of hurtigruter in Trondheim harbour. All together there were four ships lying at the quay."

                        Party!!

It's so great that it's become a kind of celebratory event, with (as far as my language skills allow me to judge!) good press in the media, and far from anything to complain about - even I guess for those foreigners aboard on holiday.

For a H-geek like me it is for sure the year when I really wish I had been there during this festive period!

Edit: crossed with your #148 Mark!...you anticipated my language skills reference!!!!!!!!

Never happened before, apart from the 1997 Ski Championship in Trondheim I guess....
