Interesting images indeed. She is obviously built to navigate icy waters.

Turns out that HMS Endurance was originally built in Norway as MV Polar Circle http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/operatio...hms-endurance/

Enquiry into her flooding by the MoD blames a valve opening during maintenance work:

Isn't this the ship which has been featured in a series of programs on either Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel recently?

I vaguely recognize the name and the red hull, but I'm not sure if this is one-and-the-same vessel.

I confess, we only receive the free channels so I can't answer that one. I'm sure some other CVers will be able to confirm if you are right (which of course you will be )

            Yes!
This is the ship of the TV-documentary "Assignment Antarctis" Polar Circle, sold to the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Endurance. She plays the lead role in the documentary. It seems like her Bergen diesels caused a lot of trouble for this ship. Stay tunet for the last episode.

                Bye Bye Endurance?

Two years after the accident it is now looking likely that HMS Endurance may never see navy service again. Faced with a reported £40m estimate to refit her, the navy have now announced they are about to sign an initial 3 year lease for a replacement vessel - the MV Polarbjørn, a Norwegian ice patrol ship. It is also reported that the navy will have the option to extend the lease for another 2 years, or to buy the ship.

The MV Polarbjørn will be renamed HMS Protector, and commissioned into the Royal Navy in June.

I have always thought that the Endurance is an elegant looking expedition ship, and I hope she will find a new life after her current assignment.
