    Another from Shipwreck log today:
    The 72 meter long, 1826 dwt coastal freighter Molo Trader became disabled during the night off Buholmen, Norway. The Molo Trader had suffered engine failure close to the shore in heavy seas. The master sent out a distress call. Luckily, the fishing vessel Knester was nearby and rushed to the scene. The Knester was able to get a heaving line over to the Molo Trader and keep the freighter from going ashore. The Knester kept the Molo Trader safe for two hours until the rescue lifeboat and tug B.B. Ocean arrived. The two rescue vessels took the Molo Trader under tow to Humla, Norway. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

      Yet one more from Shipwreck Log today:
      The 105 meter long container ship Oehringen collided with the 110 meter long self-propelled barge Linquenda on the Maas River near Zwijndrecht, Netherlands. The Oehringen was passing under the Old Meuse bridge when it struck the moored Linquenda. The master of the Oehringen had pass on the wrong side of the bridge pillar. Reports state several were injured in the collision with two being sent to hospital. Both vessels sustained damage, but no water ingress. The Oehringen continued to Dordrecht where authorities met the vessel. Alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

        Somebody has all the bad luck:
        The 110 meter long freighter Norvind became disabled off Førland near Haugesund, Norway after suffering an engine room blackout. The Norvind’s crew were unable to restart the engines and the vessel was being pushed towards shore. The crew contacted the Rescue Coordination Centre who dispatched a rescue helicopter to the scene. The tug BB Coaster and a salvage vessel also headed out to the scene. The crew was able to drop the Norvind’s anchor before the vessel could run aground. The tug took the Norvind under tow bound for Haugesund. None of the nine crew on board the Norvind were injured and no pollution was released. The Norvind was bound for Tyssedal before the vessel’s engines broke down. The Norvind was reported disabled on October 7, 2011 near Kristiansand. The crew replaced a fuel pump and was allowed to proceed. Port authorities report that the vessel will undergo a thorough inspection before the Norvind is allowed to leave.

          From Shipwreck Log today:
          The 58 meter long ferry Monnik went aground on a sandbank near Schiermonnikoog, Netherlands. The ferry had some 100 to 150 passengers on board when a strong wind and tide kept the Monnik firmly on the sandbank for eight hours. Two lifeboats from the KNRM were able to pull the ferry free. The Monnik continued under its own power to the island. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution.


          Has the winter come early to Holland this year???

            Latest on the Rena salvage from Shipwreck Log:

            Oil Removal

            Over 800 tons of oil has been removed from the Rena as the salvage team completed pumping out the port number five tank. The remaining 600 tons are located in other four other tanks. The starboard number 5 tank is submerged will be much more difficult task. The salvage team needs to reach an underwater manhole access hatch in pitch black conditions with everything disoriented due to the heavy list. The team is trying to dam off the section and pump out the water around it to gain access. The starboard number 5 tank has 350 tons of oil to be removed. In addition, there are three other tanks in the engine room holding a combined 250 tons of oil still to go. Salvors are also attempting to pump out oil from the settling tanks. The remaining amount of oil in the settling tanks is not known but estimates place it under 100 tons.

            Containers

            The heavy crane vessel Pancaldo has arrived on scene and has removed some containers from the sea floor. The Pancaldo will begin salvage operations and removal of containers off the deck of the Rena when oil removal has completed. In addition, the vessel Brandy Wine is also being used in recovery of containers. The Brandy Wine has already remove containers from Motiti Island.

            Environmental Cleanup

            Reports state over 808 tons of waste has been collected so far by over 6,700 people. The cleanup effort has been split between cleaning up oil and the pollution resulting from the contents of the containers. Reports state the cleanup process will continue as several beaches that get re-oiled and re-cleaned daily. Officials have ended the need for volunteers to register to help with cleanup efforts. They have requested that volunteers to just turn up. More than 1300 oiled birds have died with another 885 being treated at wildlife facilities. Officials have added six enclosures specialized for penguins. Currently, there are over 300 penguins being housed at Te Maunga.

                  The salvage crew works under difficult conditions, with a heavy list:


                  But they have their methods to cope with that:

                  From left; an Air Compressor, a Generator and the Hydraulic power pack driving the submersible pump(s) used to remove Heavy Fuel Oil from the tanks.

                  Here is a couple of picture taken when she grounded on 05. Oct. 2011:

                  The sad thing is that at that stage she could probably have been pulled free, after some trimming and transfer of HFO from fwrd and midships tanks to aft tanks.

                  The Engine Room was still intact and heating available to keep the Fuel pumpable and usable to run the generators and Main Engine.

                  If the Main Engine had been used at full astern, and if there had been a large enough towing vessel available, she could most likely have been re-floated with minimal damages and MOST of the Fuel on board, in stead of on the beaches as now.

                    Thank you for these updates. She really is in a bad state now.

                    I know from experience just how hard things can become when working aboard a vessel that's got a bad list. Apart from obviously making any salvage operations that more difficult, it's also much more physically tiring for those working aboard. Just trying to stand upright takes it toll on you after a while.

                    I like the adjustable platforms they have rigged up for the gensets, compressors and other such equipment, a very simple solution to a big problem.

                    Seeing the state of her now it does make you wonder how different the outcome might have been if they had attempted to remove her right from the start. But these days it's all red tape i guess. Governments and various agency's getting involved - you can't do this, you can't do that, and so on. So now they have a situation where they have to try and unload a vessel that is rapidly falling apart underneath their feet.
                    Your charts, your radar, your eyes and ears - if all 4 agree, you may proceed with caution.

                      Some of the report in Shipwreck Log the last couple of days:
                      The 50 meter long, 663 gt ferry Gudvangen went aground near Krakhellesundet, Norway. The Gudvangen suffered damage to its bow section with a hole in the hull. Three crewmen were injured of the four on board at the time. The ferry was able to refloat itself later the same day. The Gudvangen was heading from Maloy with no passengers or cargo to Bergen for winter layup. Authorities state alcohol was not a factor in the incident. No pollution was released.

                        Another one near Tarunga, NZ:
                        The 133 meter long, 8015 dwt container ship Schelde Trader went aground near the entrance to Tauranga, New Zealand. The Schelde Trader was departing Tauranga when it suffered a power failure and lost steering. The current then carried the disabled vessel onto the rocks. Reports state the damage was slight and the vessel was refloated and taken back to harbour by the tug Te Matua. No reports of injuries or pollution being released. The Schelde Trader will be inspected and officials have stated there will be an investigation into the incident. The Schelde Trader had stopped in Tauranga to refuel and was headed to Noumea, New Caledonia. The grounding of the Schelde Trader is less than a month after the container ship Rena hit the Astrolabe Reef off the Tauranga coast.

                          Which leads nicely up to the l;atest on the Rena:
                          Salvage Update

                          Latest reports state the Rena is predicted to breakup as conditions worsen. Weather forecasts have swells growing from 3 meters up to 5 meters. Salvage teams have also reported further buckling of the hull along the submerged starboard side just forward of the bridge.

                          Salvage teams are preparing for the worst. Tracking sensors are being attached to containers with additional tugs are ready to be deployed to recover any containers that fall into the sea. The tug Go Canopus is to stand by if the Rena breaks up. The Go Canopus would tow the stern to shallower water to allow futher oil removal.

                          Another Oil Spill?

                          Over 1000 tons of oil has been pumped off the Rena by the salvage team. However, this leaves about 360 tons to be removed from the submerged starboard No. 5 tank. Pumping operations stopped when heavy swells made it to dangerous to continue. Salvors were nearing completion of a cofferdam to access the the submerged tank. Reports state the salvage team sealed the tanks and air vents in case the Rena broke up. If the starboard tank maintains integrity, the risk should be minimal. However, if the tank ruptures, it could double the total oil spilled to 700 tons. Some oil sheen is expected as some oil trapped from duct keel is released. Rough seas are expected to dispurse some of the pollution.

                            In Shipwreck Log a few days ago:
                            The 101 meter long, 5541 dwt container ship Pioneer Bay suffered an engine room failure and became disabled off at The Sund in Norway. The crew quickly dropped the anchors before the vessel drifted within meters of going aground. The lifeboat Simrad Buholmen towed the Pioneer Bay back into deeper water. The crew later was able to restart the engines and the vessel continued on its voyage. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
                            I don't know where "The Sund" is, but the name of the Rescue Vessel may be a hint for those in the know?

                                Not really an "accident" per say, but an event still.... a hijacked HSC.... not a good situation at all.

                                That HSC sure does look very "Norwegian" in design....
