What a fantastic way to enjoy a holiday... looking through this thread, there are many views I would expect from the French country side, but also, a few views I would not expect to have seen also: such as the Amazon- looking canals.... quite amazing.

I think this could potentially be one of the best ways to enjoy a holiday in Europe, by far. Well, as long as you are lucky with the weather, which it seems you were...

Wonderful report Ralf. Thank you very very much! Vielen Dank!

Eeeehhh! Tell me the date early enough...

Honestly, it is much fun to pilot such a ship and every one can do this after a short introduction. So i am convinced a lot of your friends will like to do this and youl won't need a skipper.

I'm not "cute" but I'm a licensed Captain and unemployed and underpaid (aka not paid at all... ) so could I pass my CV to you?

…umm, think he’s got a chance??? - in that case E, I wonder when you’re accepting CV’s for the position of the extra “college friend” you didn’t know you had???????????????????? (no "ageism" in the selection process I hope )

Thank you all for your comments . It was a big fun posting the parts of the report and waiting for your reactions and questions. At the moment i am investigating informations about the "Canal de Nantes à Brest" which is very low frequented and leads through the back yards of the Bretagne. Here the locks are not automatic, there is no lock master so you have to use them by yourself and by hand! Maybe a project for 2011..., 10 days in early June maybe....

That sounds like a great adventure for the future Ralf, sounds like it will cover lots of unspoilt parts of the countryside. Operating the locks yourself sounds like fun in itself, and because you will not be on a busy canal way you should not have any problems with traffic jams at the locks.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread, and definitely look forward to your future boating adventures!

I agree with Dane...I'm sensing mutiny. This looks like so much fun!!

Dane- Why don't we have anything on our side of the pond like this? Our holidays all seem to be like Disney World (sorry TN-I know you LOVE Disney here!!! Come back soon!) and Las Vegas............ and a "Red Neck Yacht Club" on the local lake isn't just as....well....pretty.....

Please tell me, if you want to continue this discussion about new projects and areas for houseboating. We could open a new thread, because this is just the Saone holiday report.

There is also houseboating possible in "your" states, but i don't know, if that is a similar experience, please add your comment.

And France is really an alternative, because you don't need to bring more than your clothes and a towel on a houseboat. Take a flight to Paris and the TGV (train a grande vitesse) is leading directly to Redon, the Locaboat base in Bretagne.
