Half asleep this afternoon, I watched with about a half eye, the Norwegian TV program "Pastor på prøve" (literally 'priest on trial').... he was on a fishing boat in Lofoten interviewing a fisherman with an emotional background on a fishing boat..

If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute or two, and it is bound to change. (or 35 sec??)
Remember, change is not always to the better, like here.

                  Viva La Espana....

Are foreign fishing vessels allowed to fish in Norwegian waters, or are they fishing outside our territorial waters?

Some have licence to fish within the 200 n.mile EEZ and in the Svalbard Zone. Some even to deliver their catch in Norway.
It is reciprocal. If Norway banned EU boats from fishing in Norwegian water, Norwegian boats would be banned from fishing in the EU Zone. Fair deal, as long as everybody follow the rules. Unfortunately there are sinners on both sides. Surprised?? Norwegian fishing boats break rules too!!

Only a couple of key word; "Smuthullet" & "Toothfish".
A number of boats that is engaged in fishing in un-controlled international water, like "Smuthullet", are actually Norwegian controlled, but registered elsewhere.

I remember one being apprehended some years ago, (for having strayed into Jan Mayen EEZ, I think) which was registered with home port La Paz, Bolivia. Russian crew but Norwegian "Boss" on board.

As for the "Toothfish", it may not be many Norwegian owned or operated boats left in that game, but that is because the penalty for being caught is now very large and there isn't all that much Toothfish left to catch.
Any longliner caught fishing illegally within the French EEZ around Kerguelen Island are take to Reunion, stripped and used for target practice.

PS> When I said "Norwegian waters", I was referring to Norwegian EEZ, NOT to territorial waters, where foreigners are not allowed to catch fish, except as tourist.

That is what I call real punishment. Just like it!

Thanks for the inputs on fishing in and outside Norwegian waters. Interesting reading because I suddenly understand how little I really know about that subject.

And the target practice sounds like a pretty good punishment. Almost like death penalty..
