    Re: Cruise anløp, Kristiansund 2012

    Ombugge -
In the Norway page of the European Cruise Service website, the last line, mentioning “since 1850” is specifically referring to Thomas Bennett’s travel agency, so that would appear to be their basis for that “last 160 years” i.e. initially tourism generally rather than cruise in particular

Thomas Bennett’s agency is even mentioned in the second reference of post#78, just before the "Midnight Sun at Nordkapp" section, and the existence of other travel agencies at this time is alluded to, including of course that of C. A. Gundersen’s who collaborated with Thomas Cook in arranging for Præsident Christie to be held at Kristiansund.

I see the Thomas Cook’s 1875 Nordkapp excursion as more “cruise-like” in that it was apparently first advertised and then participants booked on the escorted tour, whereas the Geiranger group of Quakers seems to me more like “hiring a boat and skipper” or private charter arrangement, and their religious purpose less like the origins of cruise tourism as such.

    Sterkoder -
Here’s another reference to Præsident Christie showing her as built in 1873 at Bergens Mekaniske Verksted AS, yard no. 29.
But do you remember where you saw that later manifest you mentioned?

European Cruise Service in Bergen claim to have been in the Cruise business for 160 year: http://www.europeancruise.no/index.html
Or don't they?? Is it just clever wording???
The plot is thickening!!! Who came first Bergen or Kristiansund???

What about this claim from Geiranger??: http://www.stranda-hamnevesen.no/history
I have posted pictures from this visit earlier in the Geiranger thread.

    Re: Cruise anløp, Kristiansund 2012

I’ve found a Praesident Christie on a fleetlist of Det Nordenfjeldske DS It gives “year built” as 1873 and “owned/managed” 1884-1936.

Well, that 1936 fits with the ship described here as having grounded and sunk in January 1936. There is a picture labelled 1884.

However a build year of 1873, whilst fitting with the Thomas Cook trip of 1875, doesn't fit with your mention of a manifest of 1852.

    Wow! Thank you, C!!!!
Looks like I remembered correctly then, although there was a slight different in dates
Your info and references here are important to me as I could not remember where I first read it, so thanks again!

I belive we can say that Kristiansund became part of the cruise business on pure luck, and was not a regular cruise port in the late 1800s, but we sure was the first

This means, in 2015, we can (if we want to) celebrate 140 years since the very first cruise call both in Kristiansund and Norway.
Hmmm....., should I send a mail to Destination Kristiansund and Nordmøre/Cruise Kristiansund...??

Now, next step at this stage; PRÆSIDENT CHRISTIE, wonder how that vessel looked like? (Must be of a certain size though, as I've seen manifests from it when used as a passenger ship from New York to Europe in 1852)

It’s President Christie. See the entry for the year 1875 in Table 20.1 on page 278 of this book.

Added as edit: I should spell that Præsident Christie, and I've found out more about how Kristiansund came into the story here under the section Midnight Sun at Nordkapp. Note that the the date of the actual departure from Kristiansund is given here as the 29th of July.

Thank you so much, 'Galaxy'!! Forever thankful for your updates!

    'Ombugge':
I guess experts would have to step forward here, as I certainly don't have any answer.
What I do know is that come 25. July, I will raise my glass and celebrate our harbour as a cruise port for 138 years, as Cook Travel Agency used Kristiansund as Norways first cruise port ever to take passengers on a cruise up north to the midnight sun.
Sadly I don't know the ship name. Anyone?

I had a look in the website for Cruise Europe: http://www.cruiseeurope.com/port/
Small places like Bekkjarvik, Floro, Bronnoysund etc. is featured, but Kristiansund is not. Why???

    European Cruise Service: http://www.europeancruise.no/index.html
does not specify where they are active, or which specific places the are promoting, but claim to cover all of Norway. Are they active in Kristiansund??

Dear 'Galaxy', in todays local newspaper in Kristiansund, Tidens Krav, the leader of Destination Kristiansund & Nordmøre/Cruise Kristiansund, say that they plan 16 calls in 2014.
I have, thanks to you, 15 on my list. Which ship is the 16th ?

    Thank you, 'Galaxy'!!

I have two types of AIS which I use frequently, both saying NORGE will arrive Kristiansund 18th September 2013 at time 00:00 UTC.

She's in Vartalsfjord south of Ålesund at this moment, not that far away..., I guess they ment April.

It looks like Thomson send Thomson Spirit instead of Thomson Celebration in 2014,so 18.06.2014 is changed to Thomson Spirit.

After reading the web-pages of our local newspaper in Kristiansund, which had an article about cruise ship calls to our harbour in 2013, 2014 and 201, I turned to CVF to ask 'Galaxy' about 2015.
And again, you deliver and I'm forever thankful!!
I just had to take a look at page 1 of this thread, and there it was...., 4. March 2015. Thanks!!
