Crystal Serenity Feb 2011 New Zealand and Australia (cruise 1304)

Well--here we go. I will try to post photos and links to my blog as I write it...but for now..here are some "Guess where I went" photos I posted on my blog, as I had not told many people I was going away....

Sky City Casino (and bungy jumping off place)

Mt. Cook- Sir Edmund Hillary's hangout

The Cathedral in Christchurch's town square (yes, the one you see demolished in the TV reporting...)

    Sterling Waterfall- Milford Sound

    Kangaroo hindfoot

Domaine Chandon vineyards in the Yarra Valley outside Melbourne

and a link to my little blog post....

Oh goody….here start the PHOTOS!!!!! And you’ve edited in where they are - well I suppose there was no point having CVF super-stalkers GUESSING!!!!!!!!!

What a start with a clever angle on the Sky City (almost conveys vertigo looking at it, never mind the bungee jumping!), Mount Cook is so stunningly beautifully white, and then a waterfall to rival Geiranger’s!

Ummm, glad that kangaroo wasn’t in the mood for kicking – just how close were you!
And I see you featured flowers in the vineyard view as well as grapes …perhaps I should have opened a bottle of a Yarra Valley wine to sip while looking at these.

But it’s that striking against-the-light view of Christchurch Cathedral that really gets to me... you would have wanted to have taken a great and special image of that place and you did.

I had never imagined it would be snow in Hell, but seeing that Hell is only located some 30 kilometers from me, there is a chance.

The notion of your Mom having a favourite shop in every port gave me such a big smile!

Love the wood carvings. Always fascinating to compare with equivalent kind of thing from around the world –seeing similarities and differences.

And great CVF bonus-piccies, but there’s a but……a serious omission……where is the photo of YOU with a Maori warrior?????????????????????

Thanks for the "Thai Friends" photo... makes me think that in some way, you had me in your mind during your trip.

                      And I love that!

                              ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to imagine me waving my arm…seagull wing…madly to attract attention.
Now we really could do with that wine-on-tap serving device thingy (as recently featured in another thread recently) to do this justice….

Wow E, that welcoming Buddha, did you find out about any particular connection, reason, for that being there? I just feel, or hope, it was not just regarded as a kind of garden ornament, but that there is a personal story behind it…

Sorry about the demise of your Malbec! (Sob…sniff…sob…)

I have never seen or heard elsewhere of such an extensive or elaborate anti-bird defence being used…so fascinating to see.

And so that brings me to the Greywacke….
Many years ago I was at a wine tasting where I encountered a wine called “Jurassic”, and, amused by the geological name, retained the label. I sent it to the editor of the magazine of the local geological society, thinking it might be a useful page filler, but left it to him to provide the amusing pseudo-tasting-notes he requested – preferring to highlight the real and just as readable story of the connections between geology…soil…vines…wine.

Anyway, the Geo-Vineyard’s idea caught on and over many years society members contributed labels to this Geo-Vineyards feature, for example Limestone Hill Chardonnay (South African), L’Ammonite (actually an Italian Merlot!) as well as many others with names where the geo-connection might not be so obvious to the casual reader. Such as Greywacke!

Greywacke is a rather old fashioned term, originally derived from the German, for a particular kind of fine grained sandstone composed of angular fragments, such as occurs south of my present location here in Scotland. And if the word seems somehow distantly familiar to the non-geological amongst you, the explanation is to be found here in the by ways of our wonderful CVF!

I’m loving this second time around virtual travelling with you E! (nice to get ashore and out of doors with you after spending so much time hanging out in CU@Sea )
