Planning for the 2018 grand tour is getting concrete now. We will start about 10th / 11th of June and will travel via Malmö and the follow the E45 (Inlandsvägen) in direction to the North Cape. Not sure right now if we also will have Stockholm on our way North. We will be about Midsummer at the Cape, and then head South via Alta, Tromsö, Andenes, Vesteralen and Lofoten. At 29th of June we will embark the MS Finnmarken in Stamsund with our car and travel to Bergen. At the 3rd of July we will leave Bergen on board the MS Stavangerfjord to Hirtshals / Denmark. Ships are booked since this week, that was the most important step.

We are on our way up north. Our first leg was stuttgart - malmö and today we passed gothenburg and trollhättan. Now we stay for the night in mellerud at the shore of the värnern lake. We decided finally to take the e45 inlandsvägen, to avoid as much as possible the boring highways. I will keeü you informed in telegram style. Report with pictures will follow later.

          Enjoy!

The weather prediction showed sunday as the last day with good weather and so we hurried a bit but really enjoyed the inlandsvägan. This evening we arrived the nordkapp in wonderful sunshine and blue sky. One hour until midnight, clouds are coming nearer, but we will have full midnight sun at the nordkapp.

Ralf! Oh my ...you're at Nordkapp ALREADY! I have been without computer and/or internet recently and haven't kept up to date with your travel plans. I don't even know where on your way north you crossed over from Sweden to Norway! The Swedish route is so very well known to me from many trips, though mostly from a decade or two ago and of course (apart from one geology work trip in Dalarna) all by public transport and some on the Inlandsbanan.

So after your post from Mellerud, I was imagining all sorts of stops in favourite places of mine like Sunne, and into Dalarna before heading north to Östersund and maybe the church village in Vilhelmina. Especially Storuman where there was a camping place by the lake, and the Wild Man statue, the old station and library, and the viewpoint in the forest with the most marvellous sunsets. You might have gone into Norway from Storuman, or continued in Lappland to Jokkmokk, Gällivare and Kiruna and perhaps the impressive route beside Tornträsk before the descent into Norway at Narvik. Anyway, like your travels in Ireland last year, it will be wonderful to see which places we have in common when you are back and starting a picture report!

Have a super time ...and after all that driving it will be a treat for you aboard Finnmarken!

Thank you all for your nice comments. We did not cross a swedish - norwegian border, we took the route over finland (to take fuel and pay in euro!!). So we had karesuanto and kautokeino, karasjok and lakselv on our route. And we were quick, for regine it was so important to catch the sun on the cape!! So we made nearly no stops. Tomorrow we will arrive in tromsö at about noon. If someone likes to have a cup of coffee with us, give a sign.

We passed tromsö today and had an amazing view from fjellheisen with ms trollfjord at the quai. Now we are waiting for the ferry, which will take us to senja island. Tomorrow we will proceed to andenes.

Sounds like a really wonderful tour you are having!

We also did this trip back in ...ehhh.... think it was when I still had Rolf (the Opel)....on the way up we drove through Sweden and pretty much the same route as you, with a few kilometres through Finland as well. No stop for the entire trip northwards. Then we also headed south through Tromsø and onwards to Senja!

An amazing trip - Senja is just breathtaking!

                      Wish you safe travels onwards!

I remember standing at Lakselv and naively thinking - not another fjord.....but it turned out to be very good and more interesting with its spectacular slate cliffs.

First rainy day, after 8 days of bright sunshine. We will discover senja today. Thank you so much for your comment, j-o. I appreciate your ecommendments very much!

Senja was really nice, a bit like a mini norway. Own fjords, mountains, lakes, tunnels, gravel roads and nice campsites. We stayed two nights and proceeded to andöya. Because of more rain and zero sight we went down to stokmarknes and spent some hours in the hurtigruten museum. We stayed the night face to face of it at a campsite and watched the northbound midnatsol sail in. Today was better weather, so we returned to andenes and joined a whale safary - successful and impressing. Now we stay at stave with view over the sea.

Yesterday it was heavy raining and we moved over from stave at andöya via sortland to kabelvag. During the day we explored the raftsundet by car and experienced foto stops with ms trollfjord. We will repeat that tomorrow with ms lofoten southbound. Today we had a walk and hillclimb near kabelvag to have a great view over vestfjorden. Then we visited henningsvaer in nearly bright sunshine. Now we have heavy rain ln the campsite near svolvaer. Tomorrow we will visit a salmon farm and later have the raftsund ms lofoten fotosafari. Then further in direction southern end of lofoten archipel.

These days our route does not always look logical, but it is more a „hunting the sun“ game, just watching all weather forecasts around us. Help us and cross your fingers.
