  • On stage

Photographing people on stage is one of my favorite motifs. It's something that comes quite naturally since I have been attending and participating in all kinds of local culture happenings for a long time.
In this thread I'm going to share some of my pictures of people on stage, performing music, theater or whatever that can occur in such places.

    Re: On stage

Starting off with a very seasonal celebration in Sweden and the scandinavian countries, the day of the Lucia.
It's actually celebrated on the 13th of December, but usually there are some performances the days before and after. These shots are from Strängnäs, 11th of December.

It's quite cold to stand outside and sing in zero degrees.

The candles brings some heat, or not?

    Cold!

    Even colder!!!

This is actually the very same stage, on August 1st:

The Swedish star Amy Diamond is performing.

      A lot of people attending.

      Some other song.

      Some more Amy.

        Sing for me!

        A couple of my friends.

        The band for the evening.

I have earlier worked with both Maria and Linda, two of the hosts for the evening.

Linda knows how to smile for the camera!

Talking about August, in 2007 I was doing some photography in Motala. It was about the best local theatre plays in Sweden:

          A pirate dance.

A empty stage waiting for the play to begin.

          Grand finale in wide-angle.

And the winners. This picture was actually used in the official press release.

            Re: On stage

Stage photography is really difficult: strong lights, a lot of people and often smoke as well.... but you, you do it very well.

I have myself done a few concerts but find it hard to get the shots within some kind of standard.

You might remember some of my humble attempts:

Concert photography: Indy Market free concert in Bangkok

Another attempt at concert photography: A Black Vanilla Concert at Central World Pattana

A very interesting thread, Tommi, sorry I have only just found it!
I love the well-chosen contrast between #1.4 and 1.6 - the first a simple picture of a smiling young singer, relaxed and exuding charm and the latter the direct opposite, reality, frozen reality! #5.1 I particularly enjoy, a well caught image both dramatic and subtle at the same time.
                I look forward to more.
PS. Forgot to mention the last one - priceless!

Thank you Ivy for the comments, I haven't been in this thread for a while.

For many years I've been a volunteer at the yearly local cabaret/show ("revy") here in Strängnäs. I have been doing a lot of different things like being a member of the band, doing the promotional material, handling ticket sales, building the stage, being the sound engineer. This year I'm "only" taking pictures and filming the show.

Here comes some pictures from the show yesterday evening:

Knowing exactly how difficult this kind of photography is, I must admit that you are doing rather well Tommi!

There's no doubt you got the "hang of it".

                          - Doctor, I got something on my throat.

Well, it's not easy to guess, but this actually a scene about two christas trees that just have been thrown out from their houses.

And the grand finale with all actors on stage.

Thank you guys for the comments.
To be honest I was a bit disaapointed when I returned home yesterday. So many images taken but so few keepers. I think I snapped about 880 pictures and used 80...but I think I have higher quality demands on myself nowadays.
Yesterday it was a bit "easier" to photograph since our lighting technician didn't care to use the smoke machine!

Ah, that video on the home-page (well it reminds me of that I also used to be the web-master for a couple years...), it's actually not done by me. I do a two hour double-DVD with the complete show in two acts. But you can actually see me behind the sound desk at 0:57 with my Hurtigruten-mug on the rack-case...

I know very well what you are saying here... I have the same feeling myself, and the same higher standard for myself. I keep less than what I did let's say 4 years ago for example.

One small fault in the image => to the bin.
