Where is the projectile inserted, is that a cap just below the dial which removes so as to insert the projectile? Please!
That was a lot of questions.
The Air hose does indeed connect to the Line Throwing Gun and the messenger rope is the one you see knotted with a slip knot to the hand rail.
The heaving line is connected to the messenger, once successfully captured on the receiving end.
The projectile is showed into the "pipe" at the front of the contraption, which is aimed at the target and fired by opening the air valve.

The other end of the messenger is connected to the Fore-runner, which in this case is a heavy (76 mm. diam.) wire.
This again is connected to a heavy duty Delta Plate at the apex of two wire legs of the same size, which is connects to Towing Brackets at each hull of this Semi-submersible Drilling Rig, thus forming a Bridle.
Here is a picture of such a bridle in stowed position:

I'll see if I can find a good illustration in my archives.

I'm with you now, Ombugge. Only the heaving line is sent over to start with and not connected to the messenger until received at the other end. I had assumed that the whole caboodle was sent over in one go and therefore I could not work out how it could all move through the gun, considering the diameters and weight. Many thanks. Don't go to too much trouble searching for the illustration, but if you find it quickly I'd appreciate seeing it.

great image Ivy,just how a postcard had to look.
sunset at a coast,a lonely beachwalker,a seagull in the corner, maybe just a little more boulevard at it,but just perfect

                      Re: Anybody's General photo thread.

Many thanks, Cecilia, Jan-Olav and Thijs. I keep trying to shoot scenes/objects against the sun, either to produce a full silhouette if the sun's disk itself is momentarily hidden but there is still almost blinding light, or else by finding somewhere that I can "hide" from the direct rays but still produce something like a silhouette but with sufficient detail to make the shot interesting. This looks as if it were shot in sepia, producing the old postcard look which you picked up. But I left the camera on full colour, such as it was, though set it to warm as in most of my photos now. That way I get the most natural colour as seen by the human eye.
I had been in Lowestoft doing some research at the Suffolk Records Office and still had some spare time in the car park, so wandered across the harbour bridge and along the front. The sun was brilliant in my eyes and I was seized with the idea of shooting against the sun. Unfortunately I hadn't brought the hood with me. So I took the snap from under the canopy of the life-guard shelter on Lowestoft beach, facing straight into the sun but with the camera only just peeping out from the edge of a pillar and tilted downwards. In that position, the only one possible, most of the promenade was hidden by the pillar. So I couldn't oblige Thijs with a bit more concrete. . I cropped some of the very dark beach at the bottom because it was the sea, the light and the distant breakwaters that captivated me. I willed the solitary figure not to go too fast as I fiddled for position, and the gull was a bonus.
By the way, it was not a sunset, according to the EXIF info it was taken at 1.04 pm.!

I thought we had a clouds thread somewhere but I'm a bit too lazy to search for it so... into the "Anybody's General photo thread".

Man that "Dane" watermark is annoying.
