Close to the city center is the park of Buon Retiro, a nice place for a walk along large mails.Big trees, music kiosk, open theatre, rose garden (but no roses in winter time...)

The Alphonse XII baroque memorial and the lake.

    Trees.

Palacio del cristal, built for the World Fair 1851 in London.

Like in Barcelona, there are many budgerigares in Madrid.Nice birds but it is an invasive species and the authorities try to limit their presence in town.

            Faro de Moncloa.Lighthouse of Moncloa.
Built in 1992, a former communication tower, it is 110 metres high, with a mirador from which you can discover Madrid with a 360° view.
It was closed to public from 2005 to 2015, since the Council had to introduce new safety arrangements (a new outside lift) after the burning of the Winsor tower.

              Atocha Station.

Largest station in Madrid.First built in 1851 but distroyed by fire then rebuilt in 1892 by an architect who worked with Eiffel.
Nowadays a large and amazing tropical garden occupies its hall.

Thank you, Yves, for posting these pictures. I have never been to Spain up to now and this is all very interesting. The botanical houses are really astonishing and wonderful.

Puerta del sol, the heart of Madrid.
It is the ground zero for the Spanish main roads (in France, it is the cathedral Notre Dame in Paris).
Always crowded at seven or eight - which is the begining of « night hours » every day, it is the rallying point for night birds and revellers before they go to restaurants, bodegas, cervezarias…
Also the place for social or political manifestations (Podemos party started here).
A New Year Eve tradition for Madrilenians consists in being at Puerta del Sol at midnight to eat twelve grapes when the bell rings.
In the plaza stands the statue of a bear and a strewberry tree, which are the Madrid coat of arms.
