As a contrast to #278, here's another insect which I have chosen especially for the squeamish ones.

    Crane Fly

No pic., shame. I saw a little cinnebar moth in the herb patch this afternoon, but it had closed wings and although I took a couple of shots, they are not very good as it was difficult to get at. I'll see if it is around tomorrow. It has crimson bars on its brown wings and when they are open it is quite pretty.

Well, first thing this morning the moth was nowhere to be seen, but later there it was on almost the same spot as yesterday - a garlic blade. It is supposed to like forget-me-nots and borage, both of which I have in bloom at the moment, but maybe it's trying out a new flavour! Unusually for a moth, it is day-flying, but once it found its spot I don't think it has moved all day. It is about 2 cm. long and when its wings are fully open there is much more crimson to be seen.
I'm really chuffed about this as it is rare in Britain and I have seen one only once before - back in 2003 on Dunwich Heath, on the Suffolk coast.

15 July 2012 (I can't keep away from this lily when it is showing off its splendour.) Unfortunately I've forgotten its name!

Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly. Taking advantage of a late September sunny patch?

The ONLY good thing with the winter season... the insects are gone!

                  They belong only two places:

                  1) Under the snow

                  2) In a paper bag as deep fried snacks!

Love the expression in the dog's eyes... certainly longing for someone to come home!
