Why do you treat us like sheep? Heard from one passenger as the group was rounded up for a trip with the famous railway Flåmsbana. MS Ventura in the background. Flåm, June 2008.

On this last trip to Norway I was booked to "do" the Flamsbana as a way of spending a day. With a memory of other such trips where I was pushed and shoved aside so the eager sheep had access to the entire window with their huge notebooks or whatever they are called this week, I can say:
If you behave like sheep, well.....?

Skomakeren, a passage not for fainthearted Captains

The Shoemaker is a very narrow narrow in Solund, Færøyfjorden, south of Alden, on the eastern side of the island Ospa. In the old days, when they sailed small boats, there was some kind of lodging here. They could anchor up for the night on the inside of this rock isle and get a roof over their head (to say that they got a bed to sleep in, would be an exaggeration), and a meal. And on top of that, they could have their shoes mended. The most of the traces of this are gone now, but it is said that there are remnants of the lodge on the isle. The Shoemaker is so narrow that only the bravest of the Hurtigruten Captains go there, and only when the weather and current are ideal. As you can see, there is really not much space. Some Captains never go there.

(These pictures were taken by various occasions).
          Regards; Sigve.

Scary place to navigate, but wonderful to do. Gotta trust the captain implicitly, though. Passengers might get visions of the Costa Concordia...

            just kidding.

Terrific compilation of history, photos, map and fascinating detail of the route, Sigve. I am struggling to avoid the total distraction of losing myself in my old photos trying to figure out if I ever sailed that way, as I don't immediately remember!

                • Bakkasundet is a beautiful narrow stretch of water... came through there a couple of times with the Crystal Symphony, before the prohibition for big ships to pass.

Funny, that scenery looks exactly as idyllic regardless what kind of vessel passes by.
