    • An abandoned school in Sarnes, near Honningsvåg, Norway.

In my account of the “Taste the King Crab excursion” to Sarnes during Nordstjernen’s last voyage, (starting in post#83 of the Honningsvåg thread), I mentioned I would have a couple of photos more appropriately posted here. They are of an abandoned school building. Apparently it was a boarding school. It’s probably been empty for many years. I imagine it might date from the 1950’s but have no specific information.

      • While the crab was prepared for serving there was some free time to take a walk, and I continued on towards the school which I had noticed from the bus earlier. Just as I had taken these photos and was about to cross the road to get closer, a car drew up and parked right outside the building. My immediate impression was of some official viewing of the place, rather than someone merely interested in taking photos as I was. So I was hesitant to explore further, and in any case it was already time to return to the Sami tent and our crab feast.

Wish I'd been listening a little more when Brother in Law was telling us about this when we came past it last year! What I do know is that it's the old Skoleinternatet (Boarding School) at Sarnes. I do also know that it's listed on the www.ghosthunters.no site as somewhere said to be haunted. I did check in Hanssen's history of Nordkapp, but couldn't find detail at a quick scan.

If you look at http://skuvla.info/skolehist/ingunn-n.htm that talks about Repvåg school being shut in 1957 and a new, big Boarding school being opened in Sarnes. This also says that whilst everyone called it Sarnes internatet, its official name was Solvang internatskole. This article is actually all about the 'last Sami speaking children in Nordkapp' and has some fascinating reminiscences including the uproar amongst the parents when the kids were brought across Magerøya in a 54 ft Fishing Boat instead of something bigger. Doesn't say when it closed though.

Hope someone can enlighten us both - otherwise I'll report back after discussing with the Oracle in the summer!
          Cheers,

          Mark.

Terrific information, PoloUK! Thank you very much.
…but of course I’ll expect even more from you next summer –maybe even a drive-by or even photos to show how much is still standing!

SO great seeing the place again... as I'm sure you remember, in my 2010 Summer holiday report: Trondheim - North Cape - Trondheim, page 5, I also visit that very same place..... and it is very interesting to compare the images.

The place has ...how do you say it.... weathered (?) so much the past two years.... this is to me extremely fascinating! But you already knew that, didn't you?

I’ve been so excited waiting to get your reaction pakarang! On the “haunted” list, so scary film location definitely! But not for long by looks of things, with one part of the roof gone. Such a deterioration in two years, and I do hope PoloUK will keep us updated next summer.

In the Polo's Bits and Pieces thread I posted several photos of the renovated docklands of Gloucester. Not all of it has been renovated!!

Suffering a bit from lens flare because the sun wasn't where it was supposed to be, these just give some idea of the 'before' views. I was particularly impressed by the aircraft con trails standing out so clearly.

Click into the link below and see what I found...., in Norway!!!

Photographers of abandoned and derelict houses/places never name names (to keep vandals away from perfect photo locations), so since I found 'AndreasS' pictures at his Flickr account, I would not tell either.

Since we don't have too many buildings of this size or type (sanatorium), it would be not the hardest work to find out where it is.
Nevertheless, I'll use 'AndreasS' name on it, the Overlook Sanatorium.

                            Enjoy these fantastic pictures:
                            http://www.flickr.com/photos/norue/s...th/4917590676/

Wouldn't it be great to make a photo session in this building during a summer week-end?? One thing is for sure, I'm not going in there on my own

'AndreasS' entered the building with two buddies, dedicated derelict photographers.
One of them being Martin Widlund. Take a look inside his Flickr accound and get breathless:

                              Awesome find Sterkoder!
I've only had a short browse as I haven't much time this morning, and it's strange trying to assess my first impressions (beyond just wow and awesome and technically superb, which of course they are). There is rather a fey look about many of the images, in the sense of magical and fairy-like, and even those that might not be HDR have something of that look about them. So I find myself thinking “how beautiful” (along with “Wish-I’d-Taken-That), but there’s the “but…”. Perhaps they are not sufficiently disconcerting, simply not scary enough for my expectations of “abandoned” on this scale. The images that work best for me are actually those of solitary objects, and the wistful wonderings they evoke …who last touched them and placed them there not knowing it was for the last time…

And the great thing is that those pictures of abandoned buildings really opened my eyes for HDR photography.
Never liked it, and never liked HDR outdoor images, but I must admit this high dynamic range suits indoor images from abandoned buildings perfect.
In fact, if they had been regular colour images, they would not work as well.
