The sea side facade, or South side:

The Main Entrance was on this side.

Some old advertising signs is still there:

Graffiti "artists" has had a field day all over the place. Not much of it "art", but at least this made a good point:

Windows have been broken all around:

Re: Photo Assignment: Abandoned and dilipated houses and properties

The Main door was open, so why not have a look inside:

The Music Lounge at the ground floor was too noisy for me, so I was not a frequent guest there:

        The Front desk has collapsed.

The Japanese Restaurant on the mezzanine floor was very good at one time:

I had many good meals there with the former Owner, who fancied himself a bit of a gourmet cook and liked to give "advise" to the Japanese Chef.

I did not venture further than the main door, just in case the ghost was around, even in broad daylight. Besides I did not have a hard hat and steel toed booths on and the place looked in such a mess that that would have been advisable.

It is a pity to see this once "glamorous" hotel, where I must have spent months in total, in such a state. But such is politics in Malaysia, when a "king" falls everybody jump on him to bring him even further down.

I'm happy to say that the Government was eventually forced to pay for the hotel that they forcibly closed. They are stuck with the problem of what to do with it now.

The former Owner is still around, but he never visits Labuan any more, a place he once owned 70% off, and was the force behind the development of.
I have not had any contact with him for many years now, but with good memories from the time working with him, and staying in Hotel Labuan.

I'll finish this report with pictures from afar, where you could almost think it was a working hotel, like I remember it:

This last picture is a few years old.

            Dear ombugge,

Thanks for feeding my fascination for abandoned buildings... I really can not explain why, but abandoned buildings are so fascinating.

The gigantic mall left abandoned to the weather would be an amazing backdrop for a fashion shoot, or a real proper professional shoot.

That is awesome pakarang. Hard post to follow! …but I said in the Nordstjernen trip report thread that I would post more photos taken in the Russian coal mining settlement of Barentsburg here, as well as in the Svalbard thread. So hope it will be a tiny bit interesting!

This recent visit (August 2012) is my second, the previous being in 1999. My general impression is that the place seems more run-down, although that is perhaps strange given that there have been some obvious renovations to some buildings in the intervening years, as well as such work currently in progress.

Here is a derelict building which one passes going up the wooden steps from the port.

It was difficult to tell if some buildings were still in use, or simply in a dilapidated state.

Other aspects of Barentsburg coming soon in “This is Svalbard”…

Fascinating buildings, and fascinating to see the decay of abandoned buildings... my favorite subject perhaps. At least right now.
