    Re: Photo Assignment : Animals

I've recently gotten back from Costa Rica. Here are some of the birds I found.

This one I am most curious to identify.

    And now for some parrots.

      Re: Photo Assignment : Animals

Historically I have had a lot of trouble getting good photos of totally black howler monkeys up in the trees with the bright sky behind them. I've finally resorted to over exposing everything else trying to bring out some detail in the monkeys. It's working but I think I went too far in many of my photos.

This troop lives near the house. On the second day of my trip they moved very close to the house and had the bad habit of howling at 4 am. I learned to ignore that. The second howling at about 4:45 to 5:00 was my clue to quickly get up as the sun was about to rise.

How on earth did you get such excellent jackdaw shots, Thijs?
I'm jealous of Dane, too. I remember some time ago he put on some shots of deer which he saw from his bathroom window. Fancy waking up to that sort of thing! The howler monkey photos do give a good image of them, Dane, and that's what's important.

take this one for for example

                is originaly this image.

taken from inside the livingroom through the glass, and the feedingpolo is about 1,5 a 2 meters from the window.in the left below corner you see a part from a vase

so zoom it in and give it a little more contrast.

and so are all the jackdaw images taken.they are all zoomed in,with some extra contrast

                just cheeting
                best regards Thijs

Yes, fair enough, I've done that occasionally when what is on screen does not match the reality, and I crop, too. But what I meant was the clarity of the shots considering the quick, sharp movements of birds.
                  Beautiful.

Sea-Otter, that is a very beautiful picture.

And Thijs, how long have you been hand-feeding them - or have I missed some? I like that distant gull in the third photo, calculating whether he dare come closer so as not to lose out on the feast. Clever shots.
Also, see my #38, what I was wondering was what shutter speed you used to freeze the action? I must learn to use the shutter speed or aperture priority on my camera instead of relying on Auto, although I'm not experienced enough to go completely manual yet, not by a long way!

                          Re: Photo Assignment : Animals

those 3 images were taken within a minute.
the first 2, is the same bird.

sadly enough there were trucks behind me that want to enter the check gate too,
on the screen you can see my name, lisenceplate number and container number and i have to type the sealnumber on the touchscreen.
so i have a few minutes for that,by taking some moments i can make it longer, but within 2 minutes i'm out of the check lane.

so by plaing save i put the camera on the automatic setting, not much time for making a good setting of the camera,it's qiute dark inthere,so maybe better to use the flash, but was freithing i scared them, and just i hand free, for the camera.but didn't do anything at the images, this is how they came out of the card.

not very happy with them, becuose not that very wel focused, but nice of becuose hand feeded them.

maybe better to had to present it this way.

                          best regards Thijs

                            Re: Photo Assignment : Animals

When I saw this last photo of this thread, I immediately remember the article I saw on the Internet recently. Someone had lost their camera somewhere in the jungle and a monkey/baboon had found the camera, and made a PICTURE PERFECT self portrait before again discarding the camera.

Later someone found the camera and got THE BEST SHOT ever.

Does anyone still have the link to that article somewhere?
