Beautiful horses - something so placid about a horse with hairy feet!!

Hope you enjoyed the 'roast leg of horse' (post 421).

Yes, well, after the recent horsemeat scandal I had all those legs on my hands - as you might say.

Horse walked into the pub. Landlord said "Why the long face?"

            I'll get my coat.

                  Re: Photo Assignment : Animals

I went to Chippenhall Green to look at the wild orchis, and there was the common full of these great, friendly horses. I was kneeling down trying to photograph an orchis when I felt a presence at my side and, looking up, there was this shire nosing about trying to see what I thought so interesting. I had a job getting to my feet again as he was so intent on joining in the fun and was pushing his head into my face. Then others came up to see what was going on, they were such a lovely bunch. They belong to various owners, and are allowed the freedom of the common from April till September. That freedom extends also to the roadways as in the New Forest where I lived for a while. The horses have equal rights with humans and you must not shoo them off the roads. If you want to drive on and they are in the way then hard luck, just sit and wait until they amble off!
I kept trying to take some close-up shots of their heads, but they are such a curious, playful lot that they would insist on nuzzling me all the time, so the best I would have achieved would have been a macro of a nostril. In the end I gave up, pretended to go away and then took some them grazing.
But I shall go again, and try harder. Will have to have a word with a group of them and explain that worldwide fame awaits if they'd only stand still with their head up.

You really are the master of these gull photos, Thijs. I love the captions, particularly that at #430.2, with the flying bird's head turned at just the angle as if it were really encouraging the other one.

Thijs has gulls, we have gormless pigeons.

Think this is probably the new generation. The nail sticking into his middle is attached to the fence - not to the pigeon. I had to check!! Think he just found it comfortable to scratch against, and he did choose to sit there after all. He flew off when it started to rain, but spent several hours there, dozing, today.

Dozy lot, aren't they? Like my collared doves, the singleton spends much of its day balancing on top of the birdtable roof, half asleep.
