Re: Photo Assignment: Autumn is here....

Something a little different to the beautiful very natural photos above - I enjoy the changing seasons and the beauty of every time of year, but I really struggle with what both Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes Night have become in the UK. The first sign of the couple of weeks that I don't like is the sound of fireworks being let off in places where they shouldn't be by people who shouldn't have them. The next one is the arrival of the trailers of pumpkins at our local (excellent) veg shop - we call the boss 'Phil the Fork'. The sun was shining though and the colours were great.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

It’s much the same here Mark, although when I first moved to Edinburgh there was not much happening on November 5th and very much more happening on Halloween than I was accustomed to. In Scotland “trick or treat” (which was unheard of in my Lancashire childhood, although there was "penny for the guy" on the eve of bonfire night) is known as guising.
Now with the increasing Americanisation and commercialisation of Halloween it all just merges together, and, at least in the shops, seems to last until Christmas!

Well, last night, as I was sitting in Edinburgh writing about pakarang’s Autumn images, he was sitting in Trondheim processing his day’s photographs. I am not going to second-guess his future posting intentions here, or get tangled up attempting confusing links. Perhaps he might post some images in this autumn thread, or in the Trondheim thread, or even as an individual photo-walk.

But I just HAVE to mention one particular image (...and yes my dear, if you only have time to post one, make this it this one, please…[insert special Lady C begging and pleading smiley here!]

All I’m going to say is that it is like #84, but updated….

Mark, great pumpkin shots. I particularly love the second one because of its perspective, but neither can I resist the expressions on those pumpkins! Many thanks for a new element to autumn colours.

A few more autumn shots, this time from today and a trip into the ancient Forest of Dean for a toddle and a coffee.

One of the main features of the sculpture trail is "Place", the sculpture that most of us know as the "Giant's Chair".

            Cheers,

Very lovely, Mark. There is such a feeling of serenity in that last one. Were there many other sculptures there?

Thanks Ivy. Didn't do the entire trail today, but yes, there are quite a few sculptures - and some of them are fantastic.

The Forest is beautiful throughout the year, but the sculptures and investment in a really good, homely cafe / restaurant at the Beechenhurst site means that people are attracted to be out and about all year.
                Cheers,

Re: Photo Assignment: Autumn is here....

Oh goodness, I'm going to have to bookmark that URL for future wanderings. It's an excellent idea to have something like that, manmade yet inspired by the surroundings and seeming to become almost a natural part of the area. And the cafe is certainly a draw. There is an RSPB reserve at Minsmere down the Suffolk coast. It covers a very large area, has many hides - including a tree-top one - and the Scrape, which is a huge area adjoining the beach which has been excavated, is full of reed beds and now forms an ideal haven for wetland birds. There is a growing colony of avocets there and bitterns. No sculpture trail, none needed in a place like that, but the most welcoming, cosy cafe.
I went down there 3 or 4 years ago in November, was following a very narrow path between the reedbeds aiming to get to a hide, when there was a sharp right bend and I just had to stop. There in the angle of the reeds was a host of dragonflies! Yes, really. I just couldn't believe it. After I'd enjoyed the hide I hurried back to the shop adjoining the cafe, and searched the books trying to ID the insects. I dragged an assistant into helping me and between us we decided that they were Norfolk Hawkers, if I remember rightly. Nothing special, but it was November, their bronzy-gold gleam lit up the reeds and she was as excited as I was.
After that I went in for something good to eat and drink while I sat dreaming of my find. Avid birders will go to the reserves anyway, but the lure of a cafe will often tempt not so bird-mad folk to go and have a walk in the woods and then in for a cuppa.

Re: Photo Assignment: Autumn is here....

I have a bit ambivalent relations to the autumn. Because autumn means end of the bright and warm summer is over.

But on the other hand......autumn is perhaps the most beautiful time. Full of beautiful colors and contrasts

                    An example of the beauty.

Autumn in Gildeskål (south of Bodø)

                    "Sjæfstinden i Gildeskål" Memaurtind 1332 m

If you have a little imagination you are probably able to see a TROLL in this high mountain coveed with snow.

And after a cold night you can wake up to beautiful details if you look down at some frozen autumnleaves

                    And my favourite

The autumn colours in Gildeskål are so beautiful, and the frost patterns on the leaves. But I’m sure you anticipated which would be my favourite image! That troll has such a nice seat up there, but he’s facing towards the right and hasn’t noticed you with your camera

A new autumn is here. And autumn means a lot of beautiful colours out in the nature.

The following images are from "Sjønstå" nearby Sulitjelma (Nordland)

A 10 years old girl I met there, gave me this......... (Note that the leaves` red color is almost the same as the girls rain-coat)

You're bringing in a nice feeling of dew mornings and high air.
Nice match with the plants and the raincoat, and a great composition too.

                          Wonderful colours of autumn Martin.

I assume the photographer was standing at the north western part of the island Giske.
