    Re: Only in China!

    China.... China impresses me...

A few days ago, I saw a documentary about young adults in China... and there is one thing that I can not seem to leave. I keep thinking about it for a long time, ever since the program.

There was a 24 year old Chinese girl (woman), who had studied at Universities in both the UK (2 years) and in China (2 years). She stated that in the UK, the pace at the University was SLOW and the students were generally more interested in how to spend their vacations and after-school time. In China, students spent their evenings, and vacations, on attaining more credits, more points, by taking additional courses and learning additional classes and subjects.

She explained, that in China, there is so much competition, that if you wanted to succeed, you would have to work hard from elementary school till the day you landed a management job.

I must say I agree with her, the academics in Europe seem to be more busy with what to do on their off time than to excell in their lives.

    Anyone else with other thoughts?

My wife has been working a lot with various Chinese lately and recently returned from a trip to Changzhi and she has a similar impression of them. They are always working and trying to be better than the person next to them. She routinely get's E-mails from them at 7 or 10pm their time. They don't seem to believe in 9 to 5 or the 40 hour work week. My hat is off to them. They work and they are beginning to reap the rewards.

This is a really interesting experience, and I must say, knowing one Chinese student in Trondheim (2nd year soon). He is so dedicated to his studies, and his priorities is thereafter.

The priorities of other students seems to be party, cinema and what/where to do in the weekend.

I'm impressed with their persistence and with their hard work. It will ultimately benefit them.

The question is therefore, have we, in the west, become too lazy?

Yes, I think the West has become lazy. I think part of it are our social systems. We expend a large amount of our resources providing support and many do not feel the need to work because they are protected by the safety net. I think many emerging countries are very much of the thought that if you want it, you have to make it. It will not be given to you.

There is nothing like hunger or thirst to drive you. I don't mean just the basics of food & water but why work hard, take risks and stick your neck out to excel when a reasonable life is guaranteed. We humans need competition and an adversity to overcome to make us excel.

            Dane,

I agree with you so very much, exactly my sentiments as well.

I can confirm that the exactly opposite happened in the poorest regions of for example Bangkok: if you wanted something, you really had to work HARD to get it. Nothing was given to you, not even things that we see as "basic rights".

I think you are spot on correct, we in the west has become lazy because the safety net provides us.

I'm not saying however, that those who really need it shouldn't get help, but it might be too easy to get help, so that people who really do not need it, they find it easier to be included in the same group.

                    Dear members,

I just had to share this story from China with all of you.... the last family of an apartment block refuses to move because they don't think the compensation was sufficient...

Then, their house was left as it was standing.... in the middle of the new highway!

Wow, landowners there must have more rights than landowners do over here, in this country the council would simply have made what's called a compulsory purchase order, basically, if the council wants your land for something, they get it.

What frightens me is the sheer amount of fake electrical goods that come from that area of the world. I have seen plenty of videos that show just how dangerous a lot of the fake stuff really is.
