It is official; America will start a trade war that nobody can win and nobody can gain from:

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-c...-idUSKCN1GK09C

Steel is a commodity and the price is set by what the market will carry. When the price of imported steel increases the US producers will increase their price and the US consumers will suffer.

Here is a great COLORIZED film from the earlier America which I found very entertaining.

Especially the part about the Model T Ford and the shot showing it negotiating a bumpy road.... that couldn't have been a comfortable ride!

The way to show how smart the "steady genius" Trump really is. He can't even fire people, which is supposedly his speciallity:

I'm sure he is bowing his head in shame for such a heinous act!!

Have you heard the urban legend about the redneck who replaced a fuse under the dash in his pickup with a 22 bullet and got shot in the nuts when it overheated.

HAHAHAHAHA.... Yes, I heard about that one, and on a TV-show some time back, it was debunked as an "urban myth". But, it's still a really good myth.

We should really rename this thread to "THIS IS AMERICA".... proving that CaptainsVoyage Forum came before Childish Gambino. LOL

Just thought about this right now.

During Trump's audience with the Queen several papers and media has remarked that she wore a broach given to her by the Obamas:

I also thought that her choice of colour of dress and hat for the occasion MAY not have been entirely coincidental?

Ther's a little bit more to the Queen than most people realise.

66 shot, 12 dead in Chicago this weekend is on the news now. Who wants to come to the United States for a visit?

I don't recall if any of you follow me on Facebook but here is one of my posts from when my wife and I were in New Orleans earlier this year.

                  Dane Deal is feeling annoyed.

                  February 17 ·

Gotta love (hate) New Orleans. Kelly Matthews Deal and I are walking to the WWII Museum. Two "guys" walk past and we hear gunshots. Turn and one person is down in the street and the two guys are running back towards us. All within 50 feet and a couple seconds. Caught in the open and gunfire... WTF were on F'ing vacation and running for cover.

I am really impressed that two security guards, I assume from the museum, were already on the street and on the radio before the two running guys got to the corner.

It's just starting to make the news:.

I guess this thread will do for my question:

I'm a little bit over mediocre interested in language, preferably the Norwegian one, but also others..., among them the English language with the american (US) twist, so to say.

In many videos on YouTube where older people talk, interview or get interviewed (and by older I mean born in the 1930 and around that time), we can here them say 'anyrate', when they mean 'anyway'.

What's the orign of 'anyrate' come from and is it kind of normal to use it instead of 'anyway'?

Last time I heard it was yesterday, when I saw an old tv production "This is your lives" with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

A man, the biggest comedian ever, Mr. Jonathan Winters, use it all the time. I have never heard him say 'anyway'.

                    I just wonder, nothing else

As a self-proclaimed former hyerpolyglot, I'm also extremely interested and enthusiastic about languages - though my interest is mainly with (South East) Asian languages.

Still, you are raising an interesting question, but I haven't even heard the word "anyrate" before. Do you mean "any rate" or "anyrate"?

If someone comes up with a great backstory on this word, it would still be fun to learn.

A very interesting question, Svein. I occasionally use "anyrate" but more usually "anyway". A point to note is that "anyrate" is usually preceded by the word "at". I tried Googling for the origin of the phrase and found that it dates back to the 1640's when British naval ships were divided into classes according to size and strength and referred to as first-rate, second-rate, etc. Later it was used from the point of view of currency exchange.
                        https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/at%20any%20rate
That site goes into long, bewildering lists of possible synonyms, so much so that there seems to be no actual "true" meaning nowadays, only the most popular in common usage. But at the right side there is an interesting account of the word's history.
                        Also helpful, perhaps, is https://www.collinsdictionary.com/di...sh/at-any-rate
                        Ivy

"To thine own self be true.......
Thou canst not then be false to any man."

Why did they welcome Trump in California yesterday??
They were hoping he would suck up so much hot air and oxygen that the fires would die.
