In India, we have a saying...

Everything will be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end.

Re: Movie time! The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Rarely…no, make that never…disappointed with pakarang’s recommendations, I had clicked and googled on those “cinemas in your area” kind of websites –current screenings, coming soon and suchlike. Oh…seemed I’d missed the boat. There are a lot of cinemas in Edinburgh, practically all of which were showing it up to a couple of days previous to my search. I even checked up on venues in Glasgow in desperation!!!!!!!

Then I thought I’d struck gold at the local “Dominion” …only to find that was too literally the case as B.E.M.H. was only showing in a few remaining special screenings for their Gold Club members, the couple of hundred pound fee (albeit conferring unlimited access plus extra benefits) not exactly justified by the frequency of my cinema going.

Veering pleasantly OT, did I ever tell you about the Dominion Cinema? The building in the suburb of Morningside is Art Deco 1930’s, and the cinema remains independent and family-run I believe. Inside it is now a multi-screen venue and has been refurbished to today’s technical standards as well as retaining an ambiance which manages to be simultaneously traditional-cosy and trendy-boutique. Oh pakarang you would ADORE the auditorium in which the seats are actually luxuriously comfy sofas in widely spaced rows and there are foot rests and little tables for drinks and refreshments….

        It’s a friendly place too.
“Oh yes its been a very popular film” chatted the guy in the box office…”we’ve had a lot of repeat custom in fact…people weren’t just recommending it to friends but coming back with them.”

Anyway, it wasn’t here but in the Cameo cinema (also with some character and different from the standard huge multiplexes) that I eventually caught up with the film in a “back by popular request” extra afternoon screening.

And I loved it! …just as pakarang said I would!

You probably heard the outline of the plot –an assorted group of older English characters come together at a retirement hotel in India, each with their different reasons, expectations and hopes. But the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel doesn’t turn out to be exactly as advertised…

Well I’m not very good at writing film reviews. My CVF family know me only too well when I’m struggling to explain why I like stuff!!!! – it usually depends heavily on listing my “favourite bits” …which in this context means you need to have seen the film first. Our British members will need no further inducement than the cast list of the “retirees” …Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson, Ronald Pickup, Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie.

For the rest of you, need I say more than that Tena Desae is in it…and I love our introduction to the hotel’s enthusiastically scatter-brained optimist of an owner-manager Sonny – played by Dev Patel – and the cinematographic whirl of his mad dash to greet the arriving guests. Oh, sorry that’s a “favourite bit”!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of those, and of course I am liking the gorgeously filmed Asian setting, the“opposites” of a film that is both hilariously comic and touchingly poignant at the same time, and which, in the context of an easy-viewing feel-good movie says something about embracing change… and that increasing age doesn’t preclude a zest for life.

I won’t now have to explain to pakarang what my habit of “dunking biscuits” is all about!

And finally, there are all those great lines and quotable quotes which seem to be “catching on”…
I’ve already overheard a guy, studying the menu at an adjacent restaurant table, declare to his companions “If I can't pronounce it, I don't want to eat it.” !!!!!!!

ahaaaa.... yes, I know the dunking biscuits habit now...

.... and needless to say, I do still have a tiny crush on the Tena Desae...
