    CaptainsVoyage AWARENESS

I have seen the effects of mankind yesterday... and it is shocking.... I'd like the first point in our awareness campaign to be about the creatures which lives of our seas.

Each day, all over the world, plastic and other kinds of garbage is thrown into our seas, lakes and oceans: in addition to our land areas. Some of these smaller objects, such as for example soda bottle tops, and other smaller items, find their way into the stomach of birds, fish and other animals...

After a while their stomachs are filled with our trash, and they starve to death, as their stomachs doesn't hold any more nutrition. This is a disaster in the making, and I therefore ask all readers of CaptainsVoyage to set an example in your own place, in your own circle of acquaintances....

STOP PEOPLE FROM DISPOSING PLASTIC GARBAGE IN THE NATURE and INTO OUR SEAS! NOW.
With best regards from Jan-Olav Storli

This is a subject very important to me. Unfortunately the laws in the United States do not think you should pull someone from their car and beat them for tossing a cigarette butt or soda bottle out the window. My most recent "discussion" was with a Sheriff's Deputy who through his plastic soda bottle full of chewing tobacco spit out the window.

I'm sometimes shocked.... or even appaulled when seeing people toos garbage out their car windows, on the streets or into the sea....

It's so unecesarry.... and really bad education. Sometimes, I feel I'm on a mission impossible. Some people just don't get it.

I never throw garbage in the nature, never. If there is no waste bin, I keep it in my pocket till I find a waste bin. Seeing a dead bird by the sea a couple of days ago, half rotten and with the stomach full of plastic bottle --- sad, and so unecesarry.

Sometimes I feel like living in a garbage dump.

I think #1 on my list are the smokers. Not because they smoke but because they don't even think about it. Done with the cigarette, toss it on the ground. My field and half the trees around my house were burned by a neighbor tossing their cigarette butt on the ground. The parking lot at my office is littered with butts. People stopped at a traffic light open their door and dump out the ash tray on the street.

#2 on my list are the check out workers at my local stores. The first thing I say is "no bag". Out of habit they scan my item and put it in a bag. Again I say "no bag" so, they pull my item out of the bag and throw the bag in the garbage. !!!!ARGH!!!! What's the use!!!!

I could go on for hours. I'm not a environmental hippie but even I see that there are many very simple things we can do to make things better.

We don't have an excessive problem in our area, even the school children are reasonably tidy although they do need reminded from time to time.

Looking at what you are saying about throwing litter out of cars though- you can always tell where there have been roadworks with traffic lights. While the cars are stopped in the queues, it must be the passengers who throw the rubbish on to the verges. I'm not sure how you discourage this but I feel that the company doing the roadworks should clean up the area afterwards as part of their contract.

In Norway right now there is a very large strike amongst many different group, striking for higher pay and equal pay between the ***es, while the city is overflowing of trash...

No trash has been collected from the trash cans for days, and rats and seagull's have a feats of a good time finding garbage around the town now...

Totally disgusting.... not a nice welcome for tourists coming to our town this summer.
