  • Olympics?

Maybe I missed it but I could not find a thread about the Olympics. Is anyone else watching? My wife and I have been watching about 6 hours a day trying to keep up with everything. We are both VERY into the Winter Olympics. I was really shocked when my wife's alarm clock went off at 3am this morning to catch something live. Hockey, all the figure skating, curling, most of the skiing events and even some of that new fangled snowboard stuff.

We just finished watching highlights of snowcross and two man bobsled. Right now we're critiquing ice dancing. We were at a pub earlier today and caught it but the sound was off so we had to watch it again when we got home. Unfortunately the version we're watching now does not have Johnny Weir commenting. I like poking fun at him while staring at Tara Lipinski. I think he's wearing more makeup than she is.

    I'm watching...., mostly curling.
In Norway, for the very first time, the commercial tv station has the right to air the olympics. That means they cut off with silly commercials at any time. SICK!
All this commercial crap does so (for me) that I don't care what's going on in Sochi...., exept curling.

I have a Canadian colleague though, who is high on ice hockey and curling. He, and I, hope to see Canada and Norway in the curling final, because then we plan a party at work where we all watch the final game on big screen.
Well, this is how the olympics looks for me this time :-)

The coverage of Olympic games by French TV is so chaotic and incoherent,it gives me the impression that i'm playing curling with a hockey stick while I'm skiing on a track of bobsleigh.

Yes, isn't it sick when money rules...?
The Olympic board of old-old men don't allow commercials of any kind in connection to the game itself, yet they seem to accept their tv programmes broken up by commercials in any country.
No, I want the days back when a non-commercial tv-channel had the responsibility to give the olympic games to the once not fortunate enough to go there themselves.

We have the same situation in Sweden where commercial broadcasters have acquired the rights to air the games. Previous years the national broadcasting company have had a terrific coverage of the games. I actually don't have the channels that are showing the Olympics, so I'm pretty unaware about how everything is evolving over there.

Funny however how curling suddenly becomes a national sport in some nordic countries including Sweden.

Though I complain every Olympics about the crazy coverage I guess I've got it pretty good. Many of the games & events we can watch in real time early in the morning on the odd NBC channels like NBC Sports Network and MSNBC. Then in the evening during prime time they have several hours of condensed coverage on the main NBC channel. Coverage is very USA centric with most going to US athletes and the medal winners. The games are shown on other channels as part of their news and sports coverage but they must be under some heavy restrictions as they keep their coverage very minimal, just announcing scores and medal winners and no coverage of the events.

We have a fair number of commercials during the edited "prime time" evening showing. This is America after all where money rules. The commercials can feature athletes and the Olympic games though I assume the advertisers had to pay rights to use the Olympic name and logo.

Curling has really gained popularity in the past couple Olympics so we have pretty good coverage of it. I was able to watch Norway-Switzerland and US-Sweden. Heck I'm even able to watch the complete biathlon races. Close-ups video in the corner of the screen so you can see where the bullets hit (or miss) the target and the rest of the screen on the athletes. Still the really popular things like figure skating, anything snowboard and US hockey get the best coverage.

The avalanche did not help. An avalanche in the back country is a risk you take but to have it happen on marked and groomed main trails is just irresponsible.

Oh, I didn't even know about the avalanche.

But still, it seems like an awful waste to let the Olympic city wither away, while people are still struggling to find, buy and achieve their own homes, and while the money spent on this short lived project could have been used to do so much good in the world.

I certainly hope that OSLO will not "win" the Olympic race in a few years time.... because I don't support using that much money on such an event. Perhaps, because I'm not interested at all in sports?

I think this is so wrong on so many levels....

              http://www.vg.no/sport/ol-2022/oslo-...le/a/10139038/

Norway will burn off some 132.000.000 NOK only in the application process trying to get the Olympics to Oslo in 2022...

Please... dear country-leaders - don't even think about wasting that kind of money when we have so many other more urgent things to spend the money at, in the country in the years ahead.
