    Re: This is Singapore

The shopping Centers along Orchard Road, Singapore competes on who has the best X-mas decorations every year.
This year the price was won by a relative newcomer; Orchard Centre, but I didn't take any picture of their decoration.
Here is a picture from the Web:

But I took this picture of Centrepoint FROM there:

A closeup of the decorations at Centrepoint from the Web:

This is from the new ION at the junction of Orchard Road and Patterson Road:

And the X-mas tree outside Ion:

Ombugge, have you a view from further back of that building on the right in #754.4? I'm trying to make sense of the multi-paned whatever-it-is above the ground floor.

Or the Octagon shaped building across the road??

The Ion is fairly new and built above Orchard MRT Station. It contains a large Shopping Centre in the 3 floors below ground and 4 floors above ground.
        The Tower block is residential.

I think that the Singapore Xmas lights are tasteful, without being too over cracked.

Yes, that's the one. I've managed to orientate myself now - just about! No doubt it is very different in reality, but from that first photo it doesn't move me much - except to run a mile in the opposite direction.

Of the two, I'll stick with this one!
            Thanks, Ombugge.

Lighting is the new fade in Singapore and encouraged by the Government. Not all is tasteful, however.

Here is the Ion at night, with millions of LED lights and panels that can create any colour and pattern imaginable:

Not all as overdone as the shopping centres along Orchard Road.

Ion indigestion! I'm ten miles away now! I had a look at that URL and the illuminations shown there are much better. The Raffles Hotel Arcade looks beautiful, almost ethereal in those photos, but the Clarke Quay I like too, even though that purple canopy thing is hectic. As for the Merlion !!!!! Now I've seen everything. Who on earth thought that one up???
                Thanks, Ombugge.

The X-mas decorations in Orchard Road has been removed and the Shopping Centres have changed from"Dingle Bell" to "Kong Si, Kong Si", which will be going for the next month or more. (How the staff can stand it is beyond me. Maybe they have selective hearing??)

But it is time to decorate China Town for the Lunar New Year, which falls on 10. Febr. this year.

The official ligth-up is only this Saturday, but here is a quick look at what it will look like this year. First along South Bridge Road:

A "snake" with a cartoon-like head and a number of yellow lanterns.

This consist of a number of red "box" lanterns, which is supposed to represent family solidarity or some such thing. Most people say; "It looks like Bak Hwa packages". (Bak Hwa is a kind of roasted pork that is a must for CNY)

                          Here is the answer.
To make sure their Maids get enough exercise:

Unfortunately it doesn't always work. The Maids mainly exercise their mouth.

Yes, it enables a lot of Singaporean women to stay in their jobs after marriage.
It also employs a lot of women and girls, mostly from Philippines and Indonesia, but also some from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand.
