    Re: This is Singapore

Details of a conservation building under refurbishment:

This former school building has gazetted for conservation, but been standing vacant for year. It forced the new Cantonment Police HQ at Cantonment Road to be shaped somewhat differently from what would be "normal".

Now they have eventually found a use for it:

PS> The old Police station that was on the site of the new building in my younger days was called Sepoy Line, after the Sepoy Indians that was stationed there in the earlier colonial days.

Why couldn't such a traditional name have been retained??

At Singapore river was a lady feeding the fish with bread:

A few years ago this river was brackish, heavily polluted and lifeless. Now it is part of Marina Bay Reservoir and teaming with fish of many different species.

Singapore is a Centre of Learning, with a lot of International Universities and Schools having set up campuses here.

This is the entrance to the Chinese International School at Duneran Road:

Many of the pupils are actually non-Chinese, incl. European, Indians and Americans. There to learn Mandarin, I suppose.

But the temple is and will be open to worshipers throughout the renovation period. (Different from last renovation when it was closed for several months)

Prayer coils are burning in the courtyard as normal:

More Singapore festivals and more decorations. This time in Little India.
It is day before Thaipusam and Little India is crowded:

Serangoon road is decorated in it's entirety, from Rochor to Lavender:

Here is the portal at Tekka Market:

What is Thaipusam all about?? Here is a link to some explanation: http://www.etour-singapore.com/thaipusam-singapore.html
There is a lot more explanations and pictures on the subject available on the net.

In stead of dying out this festival attracts more participants then ever. This year the affected roads were closed from 2000 hrs., 06. Febr. to 0600 hrs. 08. Febr. so the many Kvadi carriers and their entourage could walk the 3 km. stretch without being hindered by traffic.

This full moon also saw the end of CNY celebrations, but the decorations near the Kuan Im temple in Waterloo street was still there to the end:

To top it off it was also the Prophet's Birthday, but I don't know if that warranted any street decorations anywhere.

I keep meaning to say how pleased I was to see the renovation taking place at Yueh Hai Ching.
