Short trip to Sweden May 2013 Norrköping Götakanal

After 740km and 7 hours on German highways we arrived in Kiel and were not alone.

Embarking was a little bit chaotic, because there are roadworks at the terminal and there was no clear regulation, which lane to use and who may drive first. So many of those who arrived first, embarked as last and so on. Stena Line should organize this better, we had the same scenery in Göteborg.

    Our ship, the Stena Skandinavica:

Here is some more information about the ship.

We had our inside cabin at the rear end of the ship on deck 9. Just a few steps out on deck in a corner protected for wind and rain. Perfect place and quiet area.
The tables for the buffet were assigned, all window tables were reservated. Nobody could tell us, how to do this. We noticed later, that sitting in second row is much better, because you have a nice panoramic view and you are protected against the sun. The buffet was really fine, beer and wine are included in the price. You have two hours and can watch some decadent sceneries with staples of plates and towers of glasses...

Some kilos heavier we stepped out on deck 10 to see some nice sunset sceneries.

This is "our" corner on deck 9, just some steps away from our cabin. Nice and calm sea, we nearly felt no movement of the ship at all.

Unknown ship at 25.05.2013 at 23.30 between Store Belt and Langeland. Maybe someone can help?

Approaching the Storebelt bridge, seen from deck 11 (sun deck).

I tried a lot and nearly all failed. This is the best one.

We crossed nearly exactly at midnight. This seems to be a sport of the captain, as well as placing the ship exactly under a marked position under the bridge.

The Norwegian Star had still to be photographed, and then i had to sleep.

This is a great start to your brief holiday, Ralf, it gave me quite a "feel" for your private corner. The sunset near Langeland was superb - an excellent good omen for your trip. And you must not think that your midnight photos were anything less than very effective for they give a true portrayal of how it felt to be up on deck, almost alone it seems, enveloped in the night as the ship approached the bridge. It seemed as if I were there myself.
          Looking forward to more.

We went to breakfast early at 7.00 a.m. to be ready, when the ship is approaching Göteborg. Weather was fine and soon we could see the lighthouse ahead.

A step nearer you can see Böttö lighthouse.

The ferry to Denmark was just leaving, heading to Frederikshavn.

The design is similar to our ship, however a lot smaller. But to Denmak she needs just 3,5 hours.

During the whole last evening the ship was crowded by members of a brass band, they also played in the bar for a while, for us it was too much "Oktoberfest"-like. As most people from Sweden, they took the opportunity to buy and drink taxfree beer aboard and so some of them looked a bit twisted. They moved down to this place because of the wind and then played some pieces, loud and good. The second one was a Dixieland tune and much better for my ears, so thank you guys.

The centre of the town was direction south east to the ship, so no possibility to get pictures in the backlight. I decided to collect some harbour impressions instead.

Remarkable activities on a Sunday morning...

And of course a dear member of the forum was around.

                  More harbour motifs.

                  Nice, traditional bow painting.

As in many harbour towns, here also the area of old docks is used to raise new appartement houses with phenomenal views for ship spotters.

Last picture before entering the car deck again.

We drove then South to meet friends from Germany who are living in Sweden since four years. Together with them we made an excursion to Kullaberg in the afternoon. A nature resort with lighthouse and a big visitor centre. This is a very nice peninsula North of Helsingborg.

The historic lighthouse, which is still in use.

                    Detail of the tower.

We had a walk around the peninsula. There is a new trail, which our friend helped to sign out recently.

After wonderful views we ended in a café directly down at the shore. A marvellous place.

That member of the forum sure is around and enjoying this trip! – used to love coming into Göteborg by ship, but so sad that DFDS from Newcastle has long since ceased. Back then I was with university colleagues driving down to Lund, but from the thread title here I can see that in more holiday mode this is going to be nostalgia all the way!

You're not alone in missing 'Princess' on that run. Even more so with 'Jupiter' on the short cut to Stavanger and Bergen. The rumours are that one day there'll be Norway to England direct link again, but reckon we've lost the Swedish ferry for good. Only slightly off thread!

Re the loading for the Stena boat - didn't have that problem on either trip on Germanica / Scandinavica last year - that must have been infuriating for you. Between 20th June and 18th August, check in opens at 3pm, that makes life much easier, usually no queue, just roll up, get the tickets, and straight onto the boat.

Yes, earlier check in would help a lot, but organized queues too (fill up first lane, then open second...empty first lane, then second...it is so easy).

On Monday we had our business date and then we checked in at Bergsslussar Vandrarhem.

All pictures of Götakanal will be shown in the special thread. I will post a link later.

In the evening we arranged a date with Tommi. We agreed to Norrköping, which made it a bit easier for him to come and go there for just one evening. But still it was a lot of driving for him. But we were so happy you did it, Tommi.

In the centre of Norrköping is an old industrial area, formery textile industrie, which is completely refurbished and has new contents now: museum, art school, exhibition areas, tourist office and much more. Here is an overview.
