We are definitely in Asia somewhere... looks like the building is in a colonial style. Mmmmmm..... (thinking a bit...)...

Asia it is, (Not surprising based on who posted it)

But don't be surprised, I may post something off the web in this thread when I run out of own pics. We need something a little more specific.

Bonus point for the name/original function of the prominent building in this post.

This is Jakarta, former name Batavia, on the Java island.
The place is Taman Fatahillah. I don't know this specific building, but the building at the left corner of the picture is Café Batavia, an apparently very famous bar.

Congratulation Ralf, you are spot on again. This is indeed the Old Batavia, Jakarta, known as Kota. The seat of Dutch power in Indonesia for many hundred years and now largely preserved.
The specific spot is also correct; Fatahillah Square and the building on the left is the famous Cafe' Batavia.

Here is a few pictures from Cafe' Batavia, taken a couple of years ago, while having lunch there with my wife.

                    First the exterior:

                    Some interior pics:

(Sorry, too dark for my simple camera)

                    The famous picture wall:

If walls could only talk!!! Well, this one talks in pictures.

Here is a link to the website for Cafe Batavia: http://www.cafebatavia.com/

Not too far away is the old Port for Batavia, Klaipeda Sunda:

Bugis Prahus like these are still plying their trade all over the archipelago, "Sabang ke Merauke".

And the typical old Dutch draw bridge still standing:

It is over to you again Ralf.

Looks like a typical Dutch draw bridge of a newer date. Somewhere in Amsterdam?

No, it is not in Amsterdam...
But of course it is in the Netherlands.

OK, I defer to our Dutch friends on this one.
