Things you probably didn't know about Philippines.

We started the thread at the old forum ( http://captainsvoyage.7.forumer.com/...pic.php?t=1386 ) but continue here with great pleasure.

This thread is in danger of completely dying, therefore, I will share an image of a dear souvenir from about 20 years ago.

The Filipino Jeepney: as you can see >here< they come in all kinds of shapes and colors, and >here< is the story about them.

And look, here is a shop selling almost the same as the one I bought 20 years ago:

Starting off as a hybrid it now seems to have evolved - or diversified - into a completely different animal, doesn't it? I wouldn't mind seeing a few on our streets just to add a bit of fun and colour!!

Yes, there seem to be a move towards more environmentally friendly versions, but the old one, the one that I remember, was the worst polluting car you could ever imagine.

Here is some details and a history I didn't know about, or haven't seen before. It was actually quite shocking to see what happened and that it was filmed almost as it happened....

            The assassination of Aquino....

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vADEDZpetY

On August 21, 1983, opposition leader Senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr. attempted to end a four year exile and return to politics in the Philippines. An opponent of President Ferdinand Marcos since the late 1960's, Aquino felt it was time to challenge an aging and ailing Marcos again. Jim Laurie was the last person to interview Aquino before he was gunned down by a bullet to the back of the head as he exited the airplane from Taipei at Manila airport.

Aquino said: “If it is my fate to die by an assassin’s bullet, so be it. But I cannot be petrified by inaction or fear. I cannot stay in a corner.”
