    News from the Philippines

Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Yolanda) is severely affecting the Philippines.

I know that our Captain and a number of our forum members have friends and their families in the region and I share their concern at this time.

This was a shocking typhoon for the whole world - the strongest winds ever recorded on planet earth, with tsunami-like conditions and massive amounts of sea, rain and water:

Terrible images, shocking and sad to look at. Makes the storms we had in the UK this winter look feeble and insignificant. We moaned about a bit of flooding whilst these people had entire villages washed and torn away.

Far from news, but this section of CVF hasn't been used for a very long time already.... I came across this wonderful historical piece on youtube a few days ago.

Manila : the Queen of the Pacific.

What a delightful video to see this evening. 11 minutes long.

An interesting video Jan thanks for posting it, I like to watch these old video's and contemplate which is better the nice sedate pace of bygone times or today's non stop hustle and bustle...........

My wife has just returned from the Philippines 31st January and she would like it as it was in the 1980's

          Cheers Frank

Thank you so much Frank. Yeah, I like these videos too and only came across this one whilst looking for something from old Siam. I'm and have been truly fascinated by everything Siam these past two months. There is something truly appealing to me, and the fascination is big.

Looking at this old film from Manila, I'm amazed at the gigantic change of life: not only cars and people, but everything. Also, I find it fascinating that everything - or most of it - that we seen that film, is now more or less reduced to dust and gone.
