There will be one further post to share with you from my summer with Lookchin …and in that, I too will be using the word "special"

What a lucky bear... so incredible when thinking about all he gets to see around the world. He is already well-traveled I must say.

I do remember him climbing the fence at Leam Chabang port when he wanted to get closer to Crystal Serenity there.... had I not spoken Thai at that time, he would have been arrested.

“The bear of understanding, tolerance and hope”

Over the last couple of New Years, it seemed to have become a kind of CV tradition for me to post an illustrated fantasy adventure story, the Adventures of Wild-Bear (generally involving him falling asleep and dreaming the whole thing!) and with Lookchin naturally getting in on the plot some way or other!

But this New Year, I somehow couldn’t progress much beyond the title and the few ideas I’d had for Wild-Bear and the Magic Shoebox. The reason is not hard to find, when you see how much this thread has grown throughout the entire year.

It simply doesn’t feel appropriate right now to immediately plunge into totally make-believe happenings quite so soon after the non-photoshopped photo opportunities and REAL adventures that Lookchin has experienced on his travels.

And in particular, something really fantastic happened that I could never have imagined.

I had noticed when out taking photos of Lookchin in public places just how attractive and adorable people find him. (I have to admit that my mascot Sea-Troll doesn’t have quite the same charisma!) Then, remembering a remark of pakarang’s, who wondered if Lookchin had “met up with any locals, children or charities, or such like”, I thought I’d take Lookchin to a local event. Travels and event date changes intervened, but eventually….

Lookchin helped raise some funds for the children’s hospital here in Edinburgh.

Their logo is a child holding a teddy bear. As well as being a general children’s hospital including accident and emergency, they also, in association with the university, collaborate in important research, for example into various forms of cancer in children and the effects of long-term medication and new treatments.

The fun stories will be back, but right now, at this time of the year when the less fortunate are in our thoughts and prayers, I just want to say:-

Lookchin, I am so very proud of you.

Lookchin’s friends gather for the Scottish premiere of Summer once a Year.

Sea-Troll writes: We had to post this for Seagull – she was so emotional … well it does start with a skyscape with CaptainsVoyage.com in blue letters, and then there’s the dandelion motif, and a seagull, and Lookchin waving, and that’s even before Lissi and a hurtigrute and everything…
Big Thank You for the Best Film of All Time.

[Berns the Duck sends his apologies to Lookchin for missing the premiere –he was on bathroom duty, trying out his bath-tub simulation of the Trondheim Fjord, which may have been a bit too realistic as he was found having to take refuge in the safe harbour of the wash basin! On the other hand, Jampa the Elephant thinks it was all just some water fun for Songkran!]

I knew I could trust all of my greatest fans to enjoy this premiere. More is sure to come, I hope.

                            How cute is that!?

Not only did you remember, but you also made a beautiful card for Lookchin..... but, he had a big laugh at the gathering of letters spelling out his name.... it actually reads AY-O-O-?-?-TH-E-?-TH.....

                              Darling Bearkins
It made me SO happy that you loved your birthday card….and that it gave you such a laugh!!!!
Well, I’d found a website with a Thai-looking-style English letters font and had SUCH fun playing with it! One day you must write to me with your name written in REAL Thai letters!

I feel so much happier now that I’ve seen all your Dad’s photos for our year-long project…though I did feel a bit guilty that I hadn’t sent him the fridge magnet from Bangkok Air that might otherwise have featured in Day 322…but at least I’d confessed about this BEFORE seeing his photo. Anyway, my happiest moment of all was Day 305 and seeing YOU. I don’t think your other Aunt has realised yet that she was actually in Bangkok that very day!
Oh, and if you look very closely at Day 366…you will be able to wave to me!!!!!
Hugs and cuddles from Auntie Cxx

                                Hello Lookchin! Sea-Troll here!
I haven’t seen the photos of me on Nordstjernen’s last voyage from Svalbard yet, but I thought you would be interested to know that there have been some opportunities for maritime jobs for Bears and other creatures. For example, as Tenderpilots on the Polar Cirkel boats.

Your Auntie C was VERY annoying because she kept referring to them as “mascots” when it was quite clear they were fully qualified crewmembers with an actual card. (Even I don’t have one of those on work experience, although I do have a smart uniform.)

I enlarged the card so you can see it. His name is Olav Jan, which sounds kind of familiar. Perhaps he is even some distant Norwegian relation of yours!
