This is Bangkok: the city that never sleeps.

I have several thousand images from Bangkok: not strange after calling it my home for so many years of my life. Most of the images I plan to share in this thread may have been shown in other threads before, mostly on the old forum, but there will also be a lot of them which I have never posted before.

Common for most of them as well, will be their new processing and framing.

The Thailand section of this wonderful forum may not often be frequented, but this is one of the sections which holds the biggest importance and significance to me. It was my home for many, many years, and hence also the base of a lot of very good experiences.

Today, I'm probably more familiar with all the streets and small soi's in Bangkok, than I know Trondheim. I miss Bangkok, naturally, every day. It's a city that never sleeps and there are people, food, experiences and things going on all the time.

People are born, people play, people go to school, people work, people relax and people stress between jobs. This is a metropolis which I have a big love for, despite it's notorious traffic problems, piles of garbage, extreme heat and occasional flooding.

Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Thai: กรุงเทพมหานคร), or กรุงเทพฯ Krung Thep, meaning "city of angels" for short, it was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It came to the forefront of Siam when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayutthaya. However, the current Rattanakosin Kingdom did not begin until 1782 when the capital was moved across the river by Rama I after the death of King Taksin. The Rattanakosin capital is now more formally called "Phra Nakhon" (Thai: พระนคร), pertaining to the ancient boundaries in the metropolis' core and the name Bangkok now incorporates the urban build-up since the 18th century which has its own public administration and governor.
Before, I used to recall the entire name of the city, but now, I'm having a bit of trouble remembering all of it.

The full ceremonial name of the city given by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, and later edited by King Mongkut, is:

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit

Before I start filling this thread with image after image, I must apologize for not posting them in a successive manner. The reason is the enormous volume of images that I have from Bangkok, and when I started my digital photography, I didn't have a good filing system as I have today. So therefore, I apologize for the somewhat random order at times. I still hope you all will find something of interest in this thread as it is being built, it will undoubtedly be a very long thread containing thousands of images in the end.

The first image I post in this thread shows the temple situated behind World Trade Center (what later would be renamed to Central World Pattana). The temple is called Wat Pathumwan ( วัดปทุมวัน ) and is here seen behind the old World Trade before construction on the new mall was started. I would estimate the image to having been taken sometime between 2003 and 2005.

I think the next image may have been taken on the occasion of a Royal Birthday, in front of the Parliament:

The blue flag is the Royal flag of Queen Sirikit, often seen around Thailand in August (near her birthday and Mother's day), therefore, the image is likely taken in August.

In the next undated image, taken sometime around 2001-2004, we see the view from my apartment at that time, and towards Pratunam ( ประตูน้ำ ). In the center of the image you can see what used to be the worlds tallest hotel, Baiyoke Sky Hotel ( โรงแรมใบหยกสกาย ).

There is another thread here in the Thailand section, with an image showing the view from the top floor.

It is also interesting to note that this same view has now dramatically changed, with a lot of new tall buildings within the same frame.

The next image is also a very interesting image (at least for me), much because this scenery has also changed dramatically since it was taken sometime in 2002-2004.

The view is from my apartment in Ratchatevee ( ราชเทวี ) and looking towards Ratchadamri ( ราชดำริ ). In the center of the image you can still see the famous hotel Siam Intercontinental ( แรมสยามอินเตอร์คอนติเน ) in business.

This was soon after torn down to make place for the brand new luxury shopping mall which would be called Siam Paragon ( มอลล์สยามพารากอน ).

For those that are very familiar with how it looks like today, you will also see some dramatic changes to the mall nearby called Siam Center ( สยามเซ็นเตอร์ ). Today, it has been modernized and inter-connected with Siam Paragon.

To the left in the image, you can see the unfinished tower which was left abandoned for a very long time, and later completed as the "Offices at Central World", together with the back of old Central World.

In this image of the BTS Skytrain, it had only operated a few months. The train was new, and the service was still in it's infancy.

Today, it is a cheap and fast way getting around town, and a very important part of the transportation system.

The image was taken from my apartment back then.

In this undated image also taken from my apartment back then, you can see the palace of the Thai Princess. The palace is called Sra Pathum Palace ( วังสระปทุม ), and is located immediately behind Siam Discovery Center in Pathumwan district by Saen Saeb canal ( คลองแสนแสบ ).

This is an image which is dated August 2004, and shows the view from one of my apartments at Grand Diamond in Pratunam ( แกรนด์ไดมอนด์ประตูน้ำ ). In this image you can see that the construction of Siam Paragon is well under way and you can see that the famous hotel Siam Intercontinental has been torn down.

In the next two images, also dated August 2004, you can see that the work on the "Offices at Central World" is well underway while in the second image, you also see that the construction of the basement of what will later become Grand Centara Hotel, and a part of the new Central World Pattana Mall.

This is also an undated image..... but I still remember this view very well. This is the view from my apartment at Ratchatevee, so it must have been taken around 2000-2002 I would guess.

The canal that you see is the Sean Saeb canal ( คลองแสนแสบ ).

Jumping back a bit in time: in this undated image, I remember very well the exact time it was taken... just before midnight on December 31st 1999.

This is the "millennium night" when the whole world was supposed to stop spinning and all computers around the world would be rendered useless.

The only thing that became useless that night (and long into the next day), was my brain, after a bit too much of the bubbly water.

These images was taken with a snap-shot film camera, therefore the lack of sharpness: some of the displays at Rachadamnoern Avenue:

A jump in time again, with the help of the time machine, here we are back many years later.

This was probably taken on the way to my office in Asoke road, hence some time after 2005. This is taken in an endless traffic jam, caused by massive downpour.
