My trips to Ayutthaya: Siam's former capital

Ayutthaya (full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Thai: พระนครศรีอยุธยา, [ajutʰajaː];[needs tone] also spelled "Ayudhya") city is the capital of Ayutthaya province in Thailand. The city was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, who went there to escape a smallpox outbreak in Lop Buri and proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. It is estimated that Ayutthaya by the year 1600 CE had a population of about 300,000, with the population perhaps reaching 1,000,000 around 1700 CE, making it one of the world's largest cities at that time.

In 1767 the city was destroyed by the Burmese army, resulting in the collapse of the kingdom. The ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya historical park, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was refounded a few kilometers to the east.

Ayutthaya was named after the city of Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Rama in the Ramayana (Thai, Ramakien).

Some of my first trips to this city was in early 90's but the images from back then are not of any usable quality. The first images from Ayutthaya which I'm fairly OK with are these which were taken some time in 1999.

The next images of a decent quailty which I dare to share here, were taken a few years later after I had bought my first digital camera (a Canon D60). The date on the back of these states August 21st 2002: driving into the city:

For some reason, this next one is a particularly powerful image to me:

I seem to have misplaced my information on which king this statue portrays, but it's for sure one of the Rama-kings:

This is the same temple which appeared in the first post: Wat Wiharn Phra Sri Sanphet: I like to call the first image "road to enlightenment":

These two images were taken very early in the morning: you might see the air is fresh and still full of morning mist:
