I knew that both Aalesund and Singapore were somewhat special places, but for different reasons to be sure:
But to name them, together with Dubai, as model cities is stretching it.
There is little Aalesund has in common with Dubai and Singapore, but a lot of similarity between the last two

7 things to do in Aalesund:

It's that time of the year again. Slinningsbaalet will not set any world record this year (they already have that), but it will be an "esthetic" bonfire we are told.
You may follow the progress here until 24. June, when they will burn it all:

The "Ocean Majesty" will be in town that night, at least until 2345 hrs. Their departure through the large number of boats likely to be out near Slinningsodden may be a spectacular sight to behold, hopefully without any fatalities.

Here is what it looked like last year:

The passengers and crew of the cruiseship will get a great view - hope the weather holds for the better that night!

For the first time in 4-5 years, I will have a day off work on "Sankthansaften"..... I'm so looking forward to it and hope the weather will be great!

Slinningsbaalet will be lighted soon. The boys who have been given the honour to light it this year are climbing unsecured to the top right now:

Then it is all gone, Slinningsbaalet has been consumed by flames as planned, although a little problem occurred when lighting it. (First attempt failed, but two "heroes" had to climb up again to do it in a more drastic way)

No own pictures from this year, but here are pictures contributed to by the public:
Even the PSV Normand Skude was out there among the hundreds of smaller boats assembled around Slinningsodden.

even taped the whole thing for posterity, which you can watch at your leisure here:
As can be seen the Ocean Majesty passed as the fire was at it's biggest. (28:20 - 30:20) Flashes were going off all along her upper decks.

No spectacular collapse this years, thanks to the two fire boats keeping control at the early stages.

With heavy rain in the air - there was no Midsummernight- fire for me.

Celebrated mid-summer with friends, a home-made pizza and red wine!

The mackerel has arrived in the fjords to spawn, even into Brosundet:

Don't know how well this comes out, but there are e few of them mixed up with all that water:

Lots of asylum seekers with nothing to do is spending their time fishing for mackerel around, but none appeared to have thought of trying in Brosundet.

The "artificial beach" near the Cruise Terminal is springing back to life with flowers you would normally only find close to the seaside:

But some is not meticulously planted and planned:

If you stumble out of this pub one night and wonder where in the world you are, don't despair, just look up at the sign above the door:

Well, at least you'll know how far North you are.

But don't rent one of these, unless you are stone sober, this is Norway with a VERY low tolerance for drunken driving:

The attendant volunteered to prove that the back seat is actually comfortable:

Flats with a view and fishing rights at Nedre Standgate:

Whats for dinner today?? How should I know what is biting today. Mackerel maybe?

Children gymnasts from M&R held a meet in Aalesund a two weeks ago. Here seen parading through the streets accompanied by a Brass Band:

Some "Vikings" were parading around town a couple of days ago:

One of them must have bought his pants in Kabul:

A new Pub and Microbrewery opened it's doors in Aalesund today:

Strategically placed next to the Cruise Terminal:

If the summer weather is not to your liking:

But you still want to enjoy an Al'fresco drink at the quayside? Here is your solution, a heated tent seen outside the Radisson Hotel:

                              With a view like this:

Some don't care about the weather, they want to enjoy a trip on the water regardless:

Visited Ålesund yesterday, mainly to take pictures of the five cruiseships calling the city. Only a handful pictures taken and here they are

Parat III is a well known boat in Ålesund, as this one brought people to and from all the way up to the 1970s. She was built in 1936.
