Want to try climbing Slinningsbaalet in virtual reality? http://www.smp.no/nyheter/2016/06/24...k-12940997.ece

This is when they had reached 35 m.

    Comment

At 1230 today they topped off Slinningsbaalet with a total height of 47.4 m. and reclaim the World Record: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/2016/06/23...t-12937808.ece

Now they are home getting some well deserved sleep, before lighting the fire at 2100 tonight. The camera from smp.no will remain active until the early morning tomorrow.

Here is my own picture of Slinningsbaalet as seen from Voldsdalsberga a little while ago.
      Can you see it?:

WAOW.... I love that the Queen Elizabeth main mast is so similar to the old QE2.... I guess the old Lady was the model for the new Elizabeth. Looks like you got pretty close to the ship as well.

Found this nice little Pub & Restaurant in Apotekergata today. Friendly English speaking landlord with a sense of humor:

"Friendly English speaking landlord with a sense of humor". What more do you want???
Don't know if he speaks French, but he is half Icelandic. (Probably wouldn't be to popular with the French in town after this coming Sunday)

What else? :it was a reference to the advert for Nespresso.
Iceland-France? if France plays with 20 players and Iceland without a goal keeper,we have a good opportunity to win.

            OK, Aspevaagen then.

Brosundet has a central role in the Aalesund landscape and history. It is what the town has been named for, ("Aalesundet" = Sound of Eels)
It's commercial value, other than as a favourite motif for tourists, has diminished, but there are some activity, especially in the summer.
Here is a look at Brosundet in the spring:

And the same view a few days ago:

OK, Elton John was in town.

There is some traffic through the sound when it is open for passage:

But some have to turn around:

It is now also the source of much agony, since the single bridge across is the cause of a daily traffic jam during weekdays.
(Abt. 30 min. of "gridlock" every morning and afternoon. Now, for those who have lived or worked in Bangkok, KL or Jakarta, that may not sound like much to complain about, but it appears to be the biggest problem faced in Aalesund since big fire)

The Market (Torget) see a little activity in the summer:

Especially when Norwegian Strawberries are in season:

The first Valldal strawberries are still a week or so away. (The best in the world)

                The wharfs are mostly empty:

But the steps to Fjellstua are well trodden:

The new steps and platform(s) going up to Fjellstua looks great... a must-do thing on my next visit in the end of October.

A few more Slinningsbua photos to add to the collection - it looks fantastic at a distance, with the mountains and clouds behind.

All from the same 'secret location' that Ombugge revealed to the world in the cruise ship thread!!

Firstly - lots of plastic watching some burning timber ...

With Nautica on 'short finals' to her berth ...

Seabourn Quest doing the same thing, but without the Tug for company.

And the building just looking amazing, sinister, beautiful, lonely, with no ships!

                  Cheers,

                  Mark.

A couple of days - about a week too few. Didn't do half of what we planned to - had a great time.

Get an inside view of Aalesund. This is the new "parking house" shot out in Aksla:

Not too crowded yet, but very handy when it is raining, or you'r in a hurry. You can enter from Raadstugata on one side of town and emerge in Kongensgate on the other in a matter of minutes. That applies if you are walking or driving, since there is a "grace period" of some 10 min. without charge.
Here is how it works: http://www.akslaparkering.no/om-aksla-parkering/

PS> there is even a rolling pavement (Rollator) to/from "Storsenteret": http://www.alesundstorsenter.no/

In my young and tender days I delivered newspapers in various parts of Aalesund and got to know many of the building pretty good.
One thing I have always remembered is the murals in the ceiling and the entrance and a stained glass window above the door of one house on the corner of Apotekergata/Brunholmgata. (Why I don't know)

I visited a Pub/Restaurant there a few days ago (post # 863) and asked the owner if this was still there, which he confirmed. He let me in to the entrance to see the murals. Here they are:

Maybe not art, but good craftsmanship, or what say you art people here on CVF??

Unfortunately the stained glass windows are no more and the rest of the interior of the building has been "ruined" as far as the original "Jugenstil" is concerned.
The Wrought Iron stairs were rusty and the decorations in the stairway painted over. (No pix)

I am not a specialist in that kind of art,but it looks nice with fine design and execution.
Allways a good sensation to see again paintings after years.

The Boat Festival 2016 is on in Aalesund.
