Nice to see the place again, which we just visited some days before. Lofoten was northbound and we embarked in Kristiansund the same evening. See my "Ralf is on tour..."-thread. Very nice pictures of the new stairs. The new café really looks great!

Thank you so much for this splendidly illustrated "steps review" Helge! Looks great, and I'm sure the new concrete will blend in after a while weathering.
I'm certainly overdue for a stop-over in Ålesund!

Lens looks good, as does the steps. Could have been worse, they could have been painted pink.

It is that time of the year again and Slinningsbaalet is under construction: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/alesundogo...le11195530.ece

I don't remember if this timelaps video of last years "baal" has been posted here before: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/alesundogo...cle9843127.ece

You may have to bear with clicking your way to it after the commercials.

No clicking - I just sat patiently waiting for the Viking helmet to disappear and then we were off!
Spectacular, wasn't it? But do they consider that it went OK, because previously it had said that it must burn from the top down, otherwise the omens were not good. It started from the top but then caught light very quickly from the bottom up. And there were no chunks falling off from the top down as in the previous video you linked to!
When suddenly the whole column was alight there was such a scramble to get off the island, they seemed taken by surprise.
A good show, anyway. And a metre higher than last year. Hurrah!

Here is an amateur video from a different angle. (Like being there): http://www.smp.no/nyheter/article11227799.ece#cxrecs_s
They were lucky it was low water so it was possible to walk across without getting wet. One left it a little late and had to jump in the water.
PS> The swimmers in the water near by as it collapses could qualify for the Darwin award.

                Idiots!

Not everybody has forgotten that St.Hans Eve is celebrated on 23rd June, not whichever happens to be the nearest Saturday: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/article11236841.ece

Hope nobody mind me reminding them that winter is on the way in the northern hemisphere?

Heia Aalesund, the warmest place in Norway yesterday: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/alesundogo...le11272232.ece

Brusdalsvannet is the main water reservoir for Aalesund. I used to spend the summers in our summer house there when a kid. It was ALWAYS warm and sunny, at least as far as I can remember.

                  Yes, I'm very happy.
Printed out the mooring plan yesterday, where it was shocing to see five or six of the sailing vessels (CEDOV among them) marked yellow as ISPS-vessels.

If the Tall Ships organisation would have to keep the ISPS fences and gates, it would have been a total catastrophy for the arrangement as such, and very negative.

Now we will have four days to enjoy..., so expect pictures ;-)

Most of those in the race has now crossed the finish line at Svinoe Fyr, but they are not all in Aalesund.
Most have gone into the fjords to await the official arrival day on Wednesday, 15. July: http://www.smp.no/nyheter/alesundogo...le11305709.ece
