A few pictures from the last time Aalesund was a Port-of-Call for the Tall ships Race, then called Cutty Sark 2001:

Looks like somebody is think ahead. Here is the extension pier for Aalesund Cruise Centre almost ready:

Sorry about the drops on the lens. (It is typical Aalesund weather anyway)

That should give ample space to moor the ships alongside and available the next time around, not like seen in 2001.

By the way, smp.no has a new and improved webcam at Fjellstua: http://kamera.smp.no/services/kamera...bmenu=1&type=1

They also have 6 webcam in Geiranger: http://kamera.smp.no/services/kamera...bmenu=1&type=1

Get ready for this years cruise season. You can do shipspotting from the comfort of your computer

                    Daybreak in Aalesund this morning:

Queen Victoria will be in town today. The fog has been laid on especially for the British guests to feel at home.
Anybody from CVF going to be there to get some pictures of QV??

Ah but things can change - what about now (1039 Norwegian time)!!

One of the really good things about Norway for a (half) expat Norwegian family is the large number of webcams that mean we can keep up with things. Sunnmørsposten is just one of those sources that allow us to either crow about how much the weather is we are, or to get upset that we'd like to be in the town gawping at 2,000 middle class English wandering around!!

                      Thanks particularly to www.webcamsinnorway.com!

Here is some of the 2000 walking around town in the glorious weather there appears to be now:

If you don't like the weather in Aalesund, all you have to do is to wait a while, it is bound to change!! (Not necessarily to the better though)
                        The alternative??? MOVE.

                              It is Midsummer night tonight.
The tallest bonfire will be in Aalesund as usual:

If you want to watch it all live later tonight, here is the link: http://livetv.smp.no/services/livetv/

PS> It will be burning from abt. 2200 hrs. local. Expect dozens of boat around at the time.

Saw the smoke and flames from the bonfire, and an awful lot of little boats, but didn't see the whole thing. Must have been impressive though!

Anyway - a few Ålesund photos from today. The weather here is fantastic - warm, sunny, fluffy white clouds - just fantastic. Got too many warm clothes with us!!

To start with, a couple of classic 'Ålesund from the mountain' cliche type shots - I know we've all seen a million variations on these, but it is an incredible view, and I think there's something different in every version you see. Braemar on the cruise berth.

Then something a little different. Thanks to advice that Ombugge gave Seagull a few months ago, we've been looking for the out of the ordinary, and today we drove down to the island of Runde. Two big ferries over glassy fjords, then a lovely rural drive. This is so, so beautiful - the bridges are like a miniature 'Atlantic Road' - but single track with passing places. Didn't see much in the way of exciting bird life, but some stunning views, some lovely beaches and a few million camper-vans (we don't have a word that covers 'Bobil' as well as Norwegian does!).

                                Cheers,

                                Mark.
