    Re: This is Ålesund

This used to be a Commercial School:
Now appears to have been turned into flats.
This? A school? Can't remember. The nearest school was Nørvøy, and this isn't.

By the way; Happy New Year to everybody!!
    Regards; Sigve.

As for the red protection on poles and trees:
Could it be that this is a pre-winter arrangement due to this being a popular area for families and cids on 'akebrett' or their first skis....., only the snow is missing right now? Just a thought.

As far as I can remember it was called Bjorknes Commercial School and occupied the lower floor(s) while the upper floors were flats.

PS> We are talking 1950s/60s here

That make total sense. Why didn't I think of that???

I assume they park the truck at the bottom of the street and ride the binds down. Try imagine that.

The ground floor was occupied by Ulvestads Handelsskole (Ulvestads Commercial school) until mid 60's. Then the ground floor also were rebuildt to flats.

That was it. Thanks for correcting the name of the school.
I delivered the newspaper (Smp) in this part of town for a while back in the mid-1950s and remembered the school, but not the name.

                    Re: This is Ålesund

Back in Aalesund and a relatively warm January. Mostly 5-7C during the day, with only a few days below 0C.

Any day with reasonably good weather has to be used to get out for a walk.
Here is more pictures from a walk in the back streets and outskirts of town

                    Nice old villa in Borgundveien:

Very well kept and full of nice antique furniture. (My wife catered a party there back some 25 years ago)

                    Fjellgata, eastern part:

                    Fjellgata, western part:

                    A side street to Fjellgata:

Not easy to climb when icy.

A very nice house in Bergveien:

Alternative route to Aksla, via Vannspringdalen:

The famous house that survived the 1904 fire:

In this old picture from just after the fire you can see the house standing there all alone in the ruins:

Aksla as seen from Stornespiren on a sunny winters day:

View of Norvoya, with the alternative route to Aksla:

Vannspringdalen is not much of a "valley", but it can be seen at centre in this picture. Stone stair and narrow tracks, similar to the more commonly used route to Aksla, leads up to the old water reservoirs shown by Sterkoder earlier.

Since we are at Skansekai; Sterkoder asked about this bollard that is situated on the SW corner and whether it could be an old gun.
I have not been able to get any answer, but looking at these picture it is is definitively possible:

Any other Aalesunder (past or present) who know the answer???
