Unique places to stay around the world.... NOT the mainstream chain hotels.

This thread was something I was thinking of when I was in Sweden last week, we should have a thread with information/ photographs/ details of UNIQUE places around the world where you can spend a night.

I do not mean the general main stream hotel or a normal hotel room, but rather places with a very unique history and past.

The place which first should be put on this list is the one I stayed at in Stockholm, I will write something in post number 2 of this very thread.

Re: Unique places to stay around the world.... NOT the mainstream chain hotels.

    Location: Arlanda Airport, Stockholm, Sweden

    Name of place: Jumbostay

Uniqueness: A former Boeing 747 jumbo-jet converted into a hostel and with suite accommodation.

    Website: http://www.jumbostay.se/

    Thread on CaptainsVoyage Forum:
A Boeing 747-200 becomes a youth hostel in Stockholm.

This is a great (read: fantastic) place to stay when in Stockholm, either for a short stop over (as it is close to the Arlanda International Airport outside of Stockholm) or for a more extended stay in the Swedish capital. The hostel has rooms in many different categories and price ranges, from dorms where you can share room with others (cheapest alternative) or a penthouse suite with private bath and shower. For the dorms, the shower and restroom facilities are in the corridor, while the suites has their own private facilities.

The Black Box Suite is located all the way aft, between the aft exit doors, and has private facilities. The aft wall of this room is the expansion wall in the back of the aircraft.

The C0ckpit Suite is probably the most awesome room on the entire plane, where you get a double bed in the former flight deck of the aircraft. There are many of the instruments still in place, and the view is awesome. This suite can be offered with an own private balcony out the exit door behind the c0ckpit, and the entire upper deck as your own private cabin. This is an awesome way to spend the day, evening and night for any aviation enthusiast.

The aircraft is very clean, the rooms are spacious and the lay out is very accommodating. Breakfast is served in the front of the main passenger deck and is "airplane-style" breakfast plates with a buffet. They also have a small souvenir shop and are often visited by aviation enthusiasts as a sight-to-see. The crew is very friendly and very dedicated to their jobs.

They have also recently opened 4 small cabin in the large wheel-base rooms (where the landing wheels used to be stoved away during flight).

    (Images are coming).

I would also like to direct attention towards this webpage: http://www.unusualhotelsoftheworld.com/

On that page, you can find many other "unique" places to stay in the world.... I would very much like to do all those on the list, and especially Woodlyn Park ( http://www.woodlynpark.co.nz/ ) and this airplane suite ( http://www.hotelsuites.nl/suites.php...ail&hotel=1894 ).

It’s gorgeous. I’ve been browsing the website, far more than is potentially good for me (or rather my bank account), since you made this your cover photo on FB. Probably as well I didn’t see it before their “soft opening rates” expired on the special suites! I could so easily have succumbed!!!!!

This is a unique hotel - in it's own way:

Welcome to the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam.

The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel has been proudly disappointing travellers for forty years. Boasting levels of comfort comparable to a minimum-security prison, the Hans Brinker also offers some plumbing and an intermittently open canteen serving a wide range of dishes based on runny eggs.

Other Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam services and amenities include:

                              - A basement bar with limited light and no fresh air.
                              - A concrete courtyard where you can relax and enjoy whatever sunshine is able to pass the high buildings on either side on the extremely infrequent days when it’s actually sunny.
                              - An elevator that almost never breaks down between floors.
                              - A bar serving slightly watered down beer.
                              - Amusing witticisms and speculations about former guests’ ***ual preferences scrawled on most surfaces.
                              - The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam Luxury Ambassadorial Suite (featuring the Hans Brinker’s one and only bath-tub).
                              - Doors that lock.
