  • Kristiansund Airport - Kvernberget

This is a continuation of the following thread in our old home http://captainsvoyage.7.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=594

Sitting here going through some old pictures, and I came over a couple from when the local airport were turned into a military base.
The occation was the huge NATO exercise "Teamwork '80".

Here's a Grumman S-2 Trader used in a COD-role on board the carrier USS Nimitz positioned just outside Kristiansund

And here's the one parked for the night

(And I can assure you; I didn't put my fingers in my ears when those engines started. The smell of oil and fuel and the sound...., mmmmmmmm...., I don't know anything that can compare....).

Saw some of these when we visited the Midway in San Diego last October. My first thought was "don't get your fingers stuck in the hinge when tehy lower those wings...."
    (I know, so girlie...)

Thanks for sharing those images... that plane does indeed look a bit awkward to me... never seen one of those in real (yet).

Here's a couple more. A bit more side view here, and I really enjoy big radials!!!

This is how they looked at a distance, together with a Boeing SeaKnight. Can't remember right now if it came from USS Iwo Jima or USS Saipan.

Interesting to see how close you could get to the aircraft's back then...

Oh yes...., ordinary fences 1,10 meters high
            A plane-spotters heaven!!!

And this is how close they parked a Rockwell OV-10 Bronco. Picture taken with an ordinary AGFAMatic 135-film camera with only parameters to change was between sunlight and overcast

The Bronco's were two-engined turbine propeller observationplanes with two twin booms.
Therefore, as ordinary aircraft, they were unable to land at the US Marines carriers....., so what did the US Marines do when the NATO exercise finished and there was time to go home...? Well...., they airlifted the planes on board...

Extra-ordinary images from a bygone time... love them.

In the helicopter lift, are there 3 lines hanging beneath the aircraft lifted?

Those three lines are for the crew of the ship to grab and position the aircraft on the deck before the helio release the hookline....

The RNoAF new C-130J Hercules #5601 'Frigg' visited Kr-sund today. Longer body and more up to date than the older C-130H from the late 60's.
(This picture is actually taken from my work, directly under the short final runway 07).

In fact...., nope. A Beech 200 roars more...., and if you didn't see that Husky (radio callsign for the 335 sqn. RNoAF Hercules), you couldn't tell it was there....

30 seconds after taking pictures of that Hercules above here, it slammed the tail in the asphalt at Kvernberget Airport and is at present time grounded due to structural damage....
A buddy of mine took a series of pictures of the landing and those pictures raised hell in the RNoAF, because the Hercules crew had taken off again after the tailstrike and flown further on....

Well, enough about that. Here's todays catch at Kvernberget, a SAAB 2000 from the english company Eastern Airways

Love the colors of the Eastern Airlines aircraft: nice balance in the livery!

Great photos as well, off course!

Don't remember if this is posted before, (in the old forum), but I found these pictures tonight that I took at Kvernberget in 1992.
It's an A-26 Invader from the Scandinavian Historic Flight that visited us when we arranged our 2nd airshow here...

And of course, as an airshow staff in charge of the static parking area, I got to come close...
