  • Norsk Luftfartsmuseum (Norwegian Aviation Museum), Bodø

I visited the Aviation Museum in Bodø in April 2006. It is an immediately impressive building. The reception, visitor facilities and a display area are centrally located beneath the control tower, and are flanked by two huge exhibition spaces – one side for military and the other for civil aviation.

A quick photo outdoors before heading in to the exhibition building.

A brief history of early attempts to achieve manned flight, including ballooning were displayed in the central area . . .

    . . . as well as a RF-5A Freedom Fighter.

How to build a plane – well, Norwegians are good at woodwork aren’t they

I had headed for the military section, and first to an upper gallery with such a wealth of photos and information as well as models that I could easily have spent hours in this area alone. The view from this gallery looking down on the main area was stunning.

However I am already realising that with my present camera I might have made rather a better job of these indoor photos. What follows are the only-just-about-acceptable ones, and I have not illustrated all the exhibits I found particularly interesting.

Here is a crashed Junkers JU-88 A-4 (part of a dramatically lit reconstruction when viewed from the upper gallery).

I think this building was referred to as a fixerhytte – it’s for radio searching and triangulation.

      Supermarine Spitfire

      Saab 91B Safir (above)
North American F-86 F Sabre (on ground)

Republic F-84G Thunderjet, showing its construction – a particularly interesting exhibit.

Having taken a flight to Svalbard some years ago, I appreciated this model of landing at Longyearbyen.

Up in the control tower. . .

          . . . you get a magnificent view!

            Great report, Cecilia!!!!

I've visited that fantastic museum five times myself, and I'm impressed of what they have achived up there in Bodø.

I know there has been some changes since my last visit, so maybe it's time to go there again. Maybe combined with a meeting with our captain...?
Oh well, I got a family to take into consideration, so I can't always do what I want.

Did you notice that the museum with its reception/tower and military and civil wing actually is designed as a propeller with two blades...?

I was thinking the same myself! - and maybe arriving on a favourite hurtigrute!
Actually flying into Bodø from the south on a clear day is also magnificent (sorry, on the occasion I did that I was at the wrong side of the plane to take photos).

Yes, isn’t that a clever design touch. Here it is seen on Google Earth:

. . .and there are also nice curves in the vertical direction as can be seen on my first photo.

I also visited the Norwegian Aviation Museum earlier this year, on June 6th 2009 to be more exact. Hopefully, there are members among us who don't mind seeing some more images from this place?
