Re: News from/about Airbus... in general.

Airbus is currently working overtime to complete it's competitor to the 787, the A350 XWB:

Power up of the RR Trent XWB-engines:

      A350-900 taxi test:

If Airbus manages to get this out in a reasonably timely fashion, not several years 787-style late, it's going to be a very strong competitior, as the larger A350-900 and -1000 (Replacements for the A340-300/600 respectively) will bring tough competitor to the 777-200/300ER. The current version of the 787 (787-8) is a smaller jet, from what I understand it's mostly used on long and "thin" intercontinental routes with few(ish) passengers. This is a different approach by Boeing and Airbus; When bringing out their first composite airliner they prioritized differently, Boeing brings out the smaller wide-body-liner, while Airbus goes for the big one. The latter obviously aiming to replace their 4-engine workhorse A340 which is sensible. The A350-900 should make for a good replacement for the A340-300s in SAS's fleet.

Or as the masked bandit that's going to steal sales from Boeing's 787 when they (customers) discover that the 787-8 is too small and the larger 787-9 and -10 are at least a few years away...?

And for a bigger Airbus experience, British Airways has got its first A380 in service. G-XLEA goes into service on the LA and Hong Kong routes later in the year, but is currently being used for Heathrow to Frankfurt services every day for training purposes! I suspect that the take off roll isn't very long!!

While the A350XWB is edging ever closer to delivery to their respective customers the first Airbus A320neo reaches completion...

The assembly of Airbus’ first A320neo has been completed following painting of the aircraft and the mounting of Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines. MSN6101, which will be the first A320neo to fly, will soon start its ground tests to prepare for first flight.

The flight test campaign for the A320neo will kick-off in September 2014, paving the way for Entry Into Service in Q4 2015. The A320neo “new engine option” incorporates many innovations, including latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices, which together deliver 15 percent in fuel savings and a reduction of 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year. With a total of nearly 2,700 orders received from more than 50 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent of the market, clearly demonstrating its leadership.

Speaking of the A350, [url=http://www.airbus.com/newsevents/news-events-single/detail/a350-xwb-test-fleet-now-complete-msn005-the-fifth-and-final-flight-test-aircraft-takes-to/]the fifth and final aircraft joined their test fleet a couple of weeks ago. This means the A350 is on time, actually. If Airbus manages to deliver their A350s on time and without the silly technical issues that plagues the B787, it will be a major embarrassment for Boeing.

I hope and I believe the 350neo will be a popular aircraft for Airbus. Hopefully it will help them recover from the 380 whose sales have slowed to a trickle.
